Free (at website & Kindle) science fiction novel - Second Star by Dana Stabenow
Title: Second Star (Star Svensdotter #1) by Dana Stabenow
Description: When the Betelgeuse message was detected, it changed a lot of things on Earth. We began to look seriously outward, not with the heady optimism of the early days, but with deliberate calculation. We knew that Someone was out there, and that eventually, they’d be coming. If Earth didn’t occupy the High Frontier, it could be ours to lose.
Esther “Star” Svensdotter’s job is overseeing the completion of the American Alliance’s first O’Neill cylinder — a massive space hab capable of supporting thousands of colonists. It’s just weeks away from commissioning, and she’ll be damned if Luddite terrorists, squabbling bureaucrats, military takeovers or rogue AIs will stand in the way. Frontier justice on Ellfive sometimes involves an airlock — you don’t want to be on the wrong side of justice. Or the wrong side of Star Svensdotter.
The first in Dana Stabenow’s Star Svensdotter trilogy, Second Star is a tale of first contact, declarations of independence, and new frontiers.

Thanks for the heads-up! I took a look and it's also available in mobi or epub (DRM-free) at her website.

I don't understand. The amazon-link says $ 1.36. OK, that's cheap as hell, but not free. Why does it say "free" in the topic?
(OK, the link on her homepage IS free, but that's not what was advertised in the first posting)

It's free in the US - other countries may see different prices, as with all Kindle books.
Try the drm-free link, it has a Kindle compatible edition.

I just checked Amazon, and the Kindle version was free. Wish it was free on B&N!

It looks like Amazon has matched the price author sells the book for on her site and lists the book price as $0.00
The book looks very interesting and I will start reading as soon as I finish stuff I am reading at the moment.
