That would not work. EInk is opaque. Light won't travel through it like an LCD.

Add it to the eInk screen itself, then. To whatever layer you see when there's no black. As long as it didn't affect the 'normal' daylight viewing.

I imagine the idea is infeasible for any number of other reasons, though.

It doesn't work like that. eInk displays use tiny capsules filled with black and white "ink" particles:



To display white, the white particles are pulled up to the top while the black particles are pulled to the bottom. To display black, the black particles are pulled up to the top while the white particles are pulled to the bottom. Shades of gray are produced my mixing the black and white particles.

The point is that you see the same "layer" regardless.
