Inserted images pick up artifacts

When inserting images (using MS Word) into an RTF file, and then using Calibre to convert to the file to epub (or Mobi) the image picks up some linear artifacts. Sometimes they are vertical and sometimes horizontal(see example). However if I save the file as HTML (from MS Word) the images do not seem to pick up these artifacts. Is there some problem with the way Calibre converts from RTF?

Example images: First is the original, The second is from the 'RTF to epub' conversion.

RTF uses an arcane and Microsoft specific image format called WMF. calibre contains some code to convert these images, but it can ocassionally cause artifacts, in such cases, you should convert to HTML using Microsoft Word.
