Android apps to run on Apple & other platforms

Nice article on Alien Dalvik's latest in Myriad’s recent Android innovations should allow most Android apps to run (unmodified) on Apple iPad & other devices.

See full articles here, here & here.

Demos to be shown at this week's CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011 conference

Hopefully this will allows some Android ebook reader software to run on iPads, e.g. FBReader, that would otherwise never be seen on ipads.

Did I mention that FBReader is one of my favorite ereaders & I have both rooted NookColor & iPad 2.

Apple blocked Adobe Flash which is so commonly used. Do you think they'll allow an app that allow uncontrolled installation of apps?

Maybe selling ipad and buying android tablet would be a better chioce?

Depending on how Alien Dalvik works, Apple may have to change their guidelines. They blocked Flash because they've had a rule (since day one, mind you) that an app can only have one process. The way flash works, you'd have multiple processes for the active browser when you went to a flash website. You'd have one for the browser, one for the and then one or more for the flash on the page.

They also have a rule against apps running interpreted or emulated downloaded code.

Wouldn't that prevent things like Webbrowsers, email clients, IM clients, etc?

Huh? What is it about an IM client that requires downloading and then interpreting or emulating program code?

Edit: The rule is questions is: 3.3.2 — An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded or used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple’s Documented APIs and built-in interpreter(s).

So it is simply not possible for someone to release on the App Store an app which would then allow the running of Android apps. What is more probable is that what they are discussing is a way of melding their code with a given Android app to produce a new iOS app. Essentially an Android-iOS emulation layer.

HTML is an interpreted language for text layout, and many IM services use it. That is what I thought of when you said that interpreted code wasn't allowed.

It's about control, not about some technical limitations.

If they approve an app that allows you to run any other app you like, what would be the point of having an approval process in the first place?

Interesting. In theory all you'd need is a version of Java or Dalvik that would run on the hardware/OS since Android is written in Java.

Considering how abysmal most Android apps are, I can't see how this is a win for anyone. I guess it could help to raise the bar a little if there is more exposure.

And yes, it is about control. Quality Control. No offense to the general Android developer audience (I'm one of them), but I don't see how this is a good thing. Apps should be written to exploit the platform on which they run. There are far too many trade-offs when you attempt to make an app that runs on every platform. I've done years of professional Java development and I can tell you that the pipedream of "write once, run everywhere" is a myth.
