Ricavision Home E-Reader to launch in November?

Details are a bit hazy on this one, but there is a remote possibility that Ricavision is going to launch their "Home E-Reader" e-book device next month. Well, the only tidbit of information we got is a notice on Ricavision's homepage, indicating the launch of their new website, along "with new SideShow products", on the first week of November.

Since you probably won't fit all your memories on this device (right?): the Home E-Reader is equipped with an E Ink display and uses Windows SideShow to wirelessly connect to a PC running Windows Vista. For more, check out this discussion thread and this older brochure (PDF).

Thanks to eagle-eyed MobileReader Jason for the tip!

If it's going to support DRM-enhanced files at all, I think that we can reasonably assume that the enhancement will be LIT DRM.

But does this thing have to have Vista in order to work? That will be it's downfall if so.

Hm, did I understand that advert right in that it's not just that you have to have a Vista computer, but it has to be running while you are reading? If so, it is a still born thing, IMO.

It's based on Windows "Sideshow" which is a Vista-specific feature. No, it won't need to be running while you're reading; just to transfer content to it. Vista Sideshow is fundamentally a PDA "linked" to your main computer; eg there are notebooks available with a sideshow screen in the lid which allow you (for example) to access your Outlook calendar and contacts without having to switch the main machine on. Very useful indeed.

Well, isn't that....big. I suppose it might give you the feel of an actual book through its size and heft but without all that pesky print. How retro. In this age of portable electronics, it's unusual to see things actually being larger than they need to be. Maybe this will start a new trend. We'll start seeing laptops the size of suitcases again. Goes along with the software bloat, I suppose.

Agreed, kind of the actual car market. Can you believe the size of some of them!

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Harry. The information on this device is a bit sketchy, isn't it? I couldn't find anything about which formats will be possible to convert to this sideshow format, for instance. To me, it looks like a concept rather than an actual device in the pipeline. Hopefully, this is not another "Kindle". Well, we can always hope ...
Cheers,
Klaus

We're getting bigger. Our cars are getting bigger. Heck, even our houses and furniture are getting bigger. Sadly the planet remains the same size it's always been.

Oh, I don't know. If the planet was also getting bigger, everything would also presumably be getting heavier.

Maybe we could shrink it enough for me to lose 5 lbs before the next bathing suit season.
