Early 20th Century Spy Fiction

Do you have any recommendations for spy fiction that was written in the early 20th century? I'm looking for fiction that is free. Thanks for your help!

In the MobileRead library try John Buchan's books. The 39 Steps is a classic.

"The Secret Agent" by Joseph Conrad. "Kim" by Rudyard Kipling also has some tie-in to spying, but I guess I wouldn't call it a spy novel, as such.

7/There's also W. Somerset Maugham's Ashenden but it seems to be available as an eBook only in the UK.

I've been reading a lot of E. Phillips Oppenheim's stuff

A couple would fit that bill:

Mr Grex of Monte Carlo (stayed up all night reading this one)
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=148736

The Lost Ambassador
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=148375

Probably a lot more, I've only read about 5 of them so far.

Erskine Childers' The Riddle of the Sands is often said to be the first spy novel, and it's a great read.

And William Le Queux as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Le_Queux

Not a lot of his books are actually ebooks for some reason. But Many Books has some

http://www.manybooks.net/authors/queuxwil.html

Seems most of his spy stuff was written around WW1. Later it was more mystery, earlier more adventure. Not as good as Oppenheim...

Erskine Childer's "The Riddle of the Sands" is a great thriller, and also an excellent book about sailing. The only problem with reading it on an e-reader is that you will want to be frequently referring to the maps that are at the beginning of the printed book. The Gutenberg version doesn't seem to have the maps. It's a pity that Childers was executed during the Irish Troubles; you have to think that he may have had a few more great books in him.
