Five of the Haunted--Short story collection at Kindle store & Smashwords
Five of the Haunted, a collection of short stories, is now available at the Kindle store and at Smashwords (from where it should trickle out to B&N, Apple, and others); Five of the Haunted bundles five stories, all previously published at 99 cents each, into a single ebook selling for $1.50. Description follows.
Everyone is haunted by something.
Haunted by ghosts. Haunted by memories of mistakes that can never be undone.
Sometimes the ghosts and memories can be lived with.
And sometimes they can't.
Here are five stories of the haunted:
"The Point" -- One night, Diana Harris, heartbroken and lonely, walked away from campus; she walked out to The Point and was never seen again. Campus legend says that her ghost still haunts The Point. Over the years, four young men walked alone at night to The Point, and vanished without a trace. Tonight Bill Spender is walking away from campus, not caring where--just away. He's walking out to The Point...
"The Old Neighborhood" -- With his son dead and his marriage crumbling, Jack's life is falling apart; he's left believing that he ruins whatever he touches. But on a last visit to the Chicago neighborhood where he grew up, he finds himself back in those streets as they were when he was young, in the last time and place he can remember being happy. And perhaps in the past he has a chance to fix the wreckage of his present.
"Passenger" -- Harry Ellis dreams each night that he's repeating an earlier day of his life, a helpless silent passenger trapped inside his younger self, reliving past mistakes and humiliations. But are these really dreams? How long can he continue reliving moments he'd wanted to put behind him? Can he stop his nightmare visits to his past -- and what happens if he does?
"The Back Row of the Balcony" -- Decades ago, in the balcony of the West End Cinema, the police shot and killed a murderer; after that the balcony regulars scared themselves and younger kids with stories about Straight-Razor Willie's ghost. Now the West End is closing. Peter Sloane will be there on the last day; he'll ignore the Balcony Closed sign and go upstairs to enjoy a last movie there. He thinks he'll be up there alone.
"Anonymity" -- Richard picks up Melanie in the hotel bar. He's done this before. So has she. No real names. No phone numbers, or home cities. Anonymity insulates them from complications, from consequences. Anonymity is the guarantee that these brief encounters between strangers will be confined to hotel rooms, with no spillover into real life. But not this time...
Five stories, previously published separately, in one collection at a bargain price.
About 15,000 words, DRM-free.
Give it a look if you get a chance.
