Wassermann, Jakob: Die Prinzessin Girnara. 1919. V1. [German] 5.9.2011

Jakob Wassermann war einer der populärsten deutschen Schriftsteller zwischen 1900 und 1933. Seine Romane errangen Weltruhm und machten ihren Verfasser zu einem der meist gelesenen deutschen Autoren neben Thomas und Heinrich Mann. Nach der Bücherverbrennung 1933 wurden Wassermanns Werke verboten. Er starb 1934 verarmt und psychisch gebrochen. [so ravenne in einem anderen Thread]
Mit den großen Zeitgenossen (Gebrüder Mann, Hesse, Hofmannsthal oder Kafka) konnte er allerdings nicht ganz mithalten; vor allem die Romane entbehren nie des Grellen, Kolportagehaften. Seine besten Werke findet man unter seinen historischen Novellen, während er in seinen Romanen oft zu angestrengt bemüht ist, Anschluss an die jeweilige literarische Mode zu behalten.

So offenbart "Die Prinzessin Girnara" Wassermanns neuromantisches Stadium; das kleine Werk ist eines der wenigen dramatischen Produktionen, ein Lesedrama, nicht für die Bühne bestimmt.
