txt to ...

I want to convert a whole library to a common format from a mix of txt, pdf, rtf, etc. Is there a portable format that works better when converting from txt (most of the books are txt)? If they work equally well, is there a common format used more than the others?

Text has nothing special (font, color, images). It is the least, but fairly clean to convert from (Hard returns with no blank line between Paragraphs ot no paragraphs starting with TAB, excepted).

Under the hood, Calibre uses HTML. My guess that EPUB or HTML are good 'master' formats.
