In this novella published in 1901, Davis, according to Barzun and Taylor (A Catalogue of Crime), "has a style and zest all his own, and the double twist at the end is as good as the wonderful atmosphere at the beginning."

Reformatted with corrections from the PG plain text compared with an Internet Archives scan of an illustrated edition dated 1903 (New York, Grosset & Dunlap), from which I copied and pasted the illustrations.
