Would someone mind explaining how 3g ereaders work? Where does the data plan come from?

In some devices, such as the Kindle, it's paid for by Amazon.
In others, such ad the iPad, it's just a normal SIM that the user provides and pays for.
In others, such as the Sony PRS-950, use of 3G is restricted to the manufacturer's bookstore, and again is paid for by the manufacturer.
