O'Connor ranks along with Shirley Jackson - as writing about "everyday" people acting like monsters to one another - really chilling (and often quite unexpected) occurrences within a seemingly normal environment. Highly recommended! She is usually classified as a Southern Gothic writer - trending into horror.

OK - a new quiz:
“People are islands,' she said. 'They don't really touch. However close they are, they're really quite separate. Even if they've been married for fifty years.” “The bitch is dead now." “The conventional parabola--sentiment, the touch of the hand, the kiss, the passionate kiss, the feel of the body, the climax in the bed, then more bed, then less bed, then the boredom, the tears and the final bitterness--was to him shameful and hypocritical.”

Nope!
Here's more: “Above all, he liked it that everything was one's own fault. There was only oneself to praise or blame. Luck was a servant and not a master. Luck had to be accepted with a shrug or taken advantage of up to the hilt. But it had to be understood and recognized for what it was and not confused with a faulty appreciation of the odds, for, at gambling, the deadly sin is to mistake bad play for bad luck. And luck in all its moods had to be loved and not feared” "He simply maintained that the more effort and ingenuity you put into gambling, the more you took out.”

Egad! 20,000! And I didn't even notice!
Maybe this will help you: “He was a secret agent, and still alive thanks to his exact attention to the detail of his profession.”

"The Spy Who Came in from the Cold?" No idea why, but it was the first spy book that came to mind!

OK, a couple of bits of dialog from the first pages of this book.
"Come with me, boy. You had best lodge with my master and me. It’s not far, but we’d best hurry. This storm’ll get worse afore it’s over. Can you walk?" and "When the mood suits him, he can belch out a flame or two, though he seems rarely in the mood. I think it is due to the rich diet I supply him with, boy. He has not had to hunt for years, so he is something out of practice in the ways of drakes. In truth, I spoil him shamelessly."

*sigh* I don't read dragon books .... except Pratchett's "Guards" series - Lady Sybil & her brood!

The dragon is incidental.
A character in the book reading from a book: “For the north was to be forgot . . . forgotten, lest the heart of the empire Ian . . . languish and all be lost. And though of Bosania from birth, those soldiers still were loyal to Great Kesh in their service. So for her great need, they took up their arms and put on their armor and quit Bosania, taking ship to the south, to save all from destruction.”

Well, for dragon's I would guess "The Hobbit" but that doesn't work ..... and for topicality (25th anniversary of the movie) I'd guess "Princess Bride" but I haven't read the book so I don't know if your last quote works or not. Mostly not. It doesn't mention Guilder.

Ok, something a bit more revealing.
"I have need of an apprentice and would call Pug, orphan of the keep, to service."
