After repeatedly saying that they will not sell the OLPC in the USA, guess what? You can have it in time for Christmas.

Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptops—one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home. Some specs that might make you drool:

Battery life is measured in days, not hours

runs a complete installation of Linux

is actually a convertible (without a touchscreen, can't have everything)

This is fanstastic news! Now this is a marvelous way of giving to charity! Kudos to those who thought this up!

And one could give the device to receive at one's local charities.

I was under the impression that the OLPC could be made available with a hand crank system for remote "electricless" regions, is this true?

Yes, the "$100 laptop" (currently costing $183, BTW) will have a number of charging options available, including hand cranks and solar chargers.

OLPC says that it will ship with 2 of 3 charging options: a handcrank, a pedal, and a pull cord.
