Images as fixed layout epub
Does anyone know any good reason why I can't just use an image as a fixed layout page? It would save a lot of faffing around non standard css and have the added benefit of working on proper (not ithingy) readers.

Quite, I just don't get the point of fixed layout epubs.
If you want fixed layout use PDF, every reader supports it, its free, easy to do and even Apple aren't going to screw around with it.
But publishers keep asking for it, Apple made a big thing of iBooks 'support' for it and it is part of epub3. Of course the big question is why, what's the point?

Does vendor locking rings a bell? PDF has been cracked, the iPub (I refuse to call it ePub) 'protection' not yet.

So, it appears to be more safe but effectively locks everybody to Apple, the way they would like it.

Yes Apple are doing what Microsoft did last century - adding new 'features' that only work on their browser/reader.
It still doesn't explain why publishers think they need an epub that thinks its a pdf.

And still no reasons why I can't just use an image as a fixed layout page.

Because publishers think that people cannot copy/pirate a epub with fixed layout because the DRM is not yet cracked...

Remember to that nobody is selling PDFs really. If you can't buy the pdf file through apple or others, customers don't want it, plus with fixed-layout you can choose the viewport size so you can accomodate different devices, unless you are on a computer or a tablet, it stinks to read a pdf on say the iphone or any other phone, it's pinching and zooming and scrolling around. ePub3 and the advances with that will help ePub take on more of a app like feel for an eBook. PDF is nice, not really an eBook, but is highly used by the ed market a lot.
