For current owners, I agree that the incremental improvements of the Vixplex display and corresponding change in the device's exterior are not compelling enough reason to trade up.
But for me, someone who wants to buy their first e-ink reader, it's a frustrating time right now. I just can't pull the trigger on the PRS-500 when the PRS-505 and Cybook Gen3 are just around the corner with the newer displays. |

I agree. The PRS-505 leaks make it intriguing, and I must say that my Cybook Gen3 engineering sample *IS* nice. It's still a pre-production unit, but I adapted to the control layout rapidly. And being able to choose between font families and nine different font sizes 'on-the-fly' in the middle of the ebook is quite a pleasure!

The sony ebook has TWO sets of page turning buttons. The old version had them both on the left. The new one has one set on the left and one on the right. It's not like there's just one set of buttons.

Amazon now seems to have it in stock. But it's through some 3rd party seller.
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-PRS500-Po...dp/B000VI72YI/ Doesn't Sony sell it for much less now? |

I just realized that SONY is quoting 24.92 in tax making the total price $305. Amazon is about $5.50 cheaper after taking into account shipping and taxes. Is it safe to buy from a 3rd party seller on Amazon? Does anyone know for sure if SONY would actually be releasing the PRS505 in October and if $299.99 would be the price? Thanks. |

Yep, since sony is currently strongly advertissing ("sexier than a librarian...")
the PRS-505 is probably about to be released ![]() Once more, keep in mind that bookeen has already sent a few gen3 to partners and will start mass-selling it in two weeks. Moreover amazon will probably launch his kindle in one month. |

Well... I guess people can keep their fingers crossed, but I doubt the current commercials are in response to a new device in the offing. Sony had a few ads, though only print ads, in most airports in the US last year and continuing through this year, it could just be their response to the current collective bite people have taken to their device and the urge to pull more consumers in.
As to the Cybook being a threat, I don't think Sony even has them on their radar; consumers are more apt to go with an established company they know before jumping to a company they've never heard of before. Sony could be marketing the current model until they've used up existing materials that have been revised in the *new* model. Perhaps they won't release it to market until all units have been fielded and liquidated from stock so they won't require a fire-sale to recoup costs. Who knows, that may be the case; but if I were a fence-sitter waiting to buy a new gadget based on rumor, I'd be really ticked if I waited 6 months before it actually came out. All that time wasted and the current model is more than sufficient (plus cheap when you take the credit card credit awarded for a new card $100-150). |

For those desperate for a reader and cannot
a) wait for the release of the PRS-505 b) open a new line of credit to get the Sony Rewards deal TigerDirect.com appears to have PRS-500 back in stock at a new lower price of $249.99. If I weren't in the process of selling my house and buying a new one, I might have tried the Sony Rewards deal. I've always heard that its best not to open any new lines of credit shortly before going for a big loan (house, car). |

Good catch. Their product manager should be soundly flogged, though. They've got it categorized under PDAs > PocketPC. I just sent them a "No, it's not, and no, it doesn't" e-mail, but I don't think they have any other place to put it.

I wonder if it will be possible to replace the PRS-500 e-ink screen with
the Vizplex screen of the 505 ![]() I'm sure some hackers will try to do that
