Have you ever found a book to be good, but too disturbing to continue?
I was reading another thread about reading things we don't agree with, and it struck me: The only time I can remember stopping a book because its premise was too disturbing was when I read How Few Remain. I find it odd, because I'm sure I could read a book set after the South won the Civil War, but something about watching the South win just struck me the wrong way.
Have you read any book where the premise or some event in the book made it too disturbing for you to continue with it? |

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum almost did that. But no. I've never stopped because something was too disturbing

The semi-historical novel "Raptor" by Gary Jennings was disturbing to say the least, but it was also an amazing book worth every page.
And I would not stop a reading because it is controversial in any form. |

The Romance of Lust, or Early Experiences came very close to being the first book that I put down due to disgust. The detailed synopsis on GoodReads explains why. It was particularly disturbing once the main character became a father.

It took me four years to read the entire 'Gulag Archipelago' - disturbing because it was all true.
Even when fiction is disturbing, if I trust the author I'll keep reading. |

No, only stopped reading something because I was bored to tears (a political science book in college) or because of frustrating language (Finnegan's Wake and an odd translation of The Tain).

I don't tend to pick up books I think I would find truly disturbing, but there was a book series that I was never able to finish. It was the Arthurian saga series by Mary Stewart. It been years and years, but what I remember was she'd made historical villian so sympathetic in the first three books, that I never could make myself read the fourth and last book, knowing he'd "turn" evil.

I found "American Psycho" extremely disturbing and I regret having read it. I would not recommend it to anybody (anyway, I think it has zero literary value).
Edit: just noticed the "found to be good" part of the title....

Nope. I stopped reading Pygmy by Chuck Palachiuck but that was bad as well as disturbing. I am sure American Psycho would've been like that, Pablo, but I never picked it up, thank goodness.
I listened to Dexter is Delicious becuase my library had it on audiobook and I love the HBO show and, yes, I finished it and actually enjoyed it, even though it was plenty disturbing. I honestly can't say why I enjoy Dexter but think I would find American Psycho too disturbing. |
