The original, uncensored Dorian Gray has been published. Supposedly, the original was more racy and "homoerotic".

Interesting. D.H. Lawrence also has different versions of one of his books (Lady Chatterly's Lover) and Wilde predates him by quite a margin. Makes you wonder though if Dorian Gray will be considered back under copyright or not since it's a previously unpublished version of the book.

it does indeed. it's actually up in the book of the club month vote for next months read, although it has a long way to go to catch up to 1984 and anna karenin. after someone nominated it i read some descriptions and does sound somewhat interesting. now that this 'directors cut' version is out i wouldn't mind reading that one instead of what is available but only if it stays in public domain. if they give it a new copyright i guess i won't be purchasing it knowing it's already free.

Cool. I think this will turn out to be the real benefit in ebooks - the ability to release director's cuts, manuscripts, etc. without having to go throughthe huge publishing gauntlet.

While the annotations will be copyrighted, the original uncensored text itself has long since passed into the public domain. I hope someone OCRs it and uploads to Gutenberg for us.

That looks to be the original PUBLISHED version, which is still cut down from the completely uncensored version Wilde originally wrote that's just been released.

well, from what I read in the Guardian (the link in the first message is to a newspaper that in turn reports the news from the Guardian) this looks like the original one - as a check I noted that the file I attach has the sentence

"It is quite true I have worshipped you with far more romance of feeling than a man should ever give to a friend. Somehow I have never loved a woman"

(see the last paragraph on page 56 in the attachment) which, according to the Guardian article is not in the censored version (as you can check by e.g. comparing the sentence above with the one toward the end of chapter 9 in the EPUB version here on mobileread), which, as reported in the Guardian, instead reads the more tame

"from the moment I met you, your personality had the most extraordinary influence over me."

And indeed, on the page I linked it does state that this is the first version.

sorry Jack, now I get you - so is the one I put up is intermediate between the "fully censored" and "fully uncensored"? or perhaps the Guardian article is not too precise...
