Shockingly enough, the very last book I finished, if you don't count audiobooks, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. It was an absolutely gorgeous book. Ravishing, even. The title character is a Dutch clerk in 1799 Japan when the book opens and meets a Japanese midwife with a scarred face. It is even better than it sounds and the writer really did his homework, as far as I can tell. There are a lot of "you are there" details in this book.

Recently read "Water For Elephants" and "Unbroken" - I'd give both of them five stars.

For me, it was "Ender's Game". A classic by all accounts, one recommended to me countless times over the years, but never could dredge up the interest to read it. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down and I read the whole thing in one sitting.

Last 5-star I gave was to The Curse of the Wendigo, Rick Yancey. There are others I need to get around to posting reviews for since then, though.

This is tough, because I read so many books I'd give 4 or 4.5 stars for but not 5, because I always find some aspect of the book that holds me back. For example, I just read Iris Murdoch's A Fairly Honorable Defeat and it was great, but the ending was just too ruthlessly cruel to me. So it was yet another book I admire but not love.
The last 5 star book for me was Time Traveler's Wife. It's not perfect and if I re-read it I'll probably find things that bug me, but as I was reading it I was swept away and it ended very satisfyingly for me. |

I second the vote for "Unbroken" - I thought this book was superb.

I know that might elicit a gasp from some, but I just felt that Ender's Game was so perfect that I just couldn't risk tarnishing it with what followed. Regards Caleb

In November I started reading a collection of Dashiell Hammett short stories called Lost Stories. I was so moved by one called The Dimple that I haven't been able to pick up that book since.

Yes. I didn't enjoy it as much because it was so bleak. Good writing, but depressing.
Have you read it?

I just finished The Door to the Sky by David Michael and decided to give it 5 stars. My first 5 star rating for an independent author.
