No... I just tried notes and annotations on a library book I checked out for my Sony 350 and they work.

Hey look at it this way. At the very least Sony is going to HAVE to do something. Improve their store, drop their price, come up with something better....... SOMETHING. Or just get out of the game.

My little rooted nook color is a nice device and it complements the Kindle. Neither one of them can do everything yet. I use it for magazines and the kids play Angry Birds on it.

I am speculating here but I think Amazon is going to be underwriting the purchase of ebooks for the libraries. The annouoncement specifically mentions how Amazon is working with Overdrive and little is said about the libraries themselves.
I was thinking the same thing about KK

After reading the announcements, I also got the impression this would be underwritten by Amazon. I hope so. That gives the whiners one less thing to whine about since it's apparently common knowledge that Kindle owners' tax dollars don't help support libraries.

Probably not. This kind of continued format fragmentation can only spell ultimate doom for dedicated ereaders. What sounds like a good idea could really be Amazon throwing down the gauntlet for the last time in their bid to kill off the competition.

I'd rather the arguing then having to have less available titles at the library because the budget for eBooks has been slashed due to having to buy Kindle eBooks. This does not bode well for eBooks at libraries. Amazon is going to break something that works. Way to go Amazon. You had to be different and you had to screw up what works.

And if things go like we think they will, this means that instead of the library getting say 20 titles in a purchase, they'll be getting 10 titles instead because they also have to support the Kindle. This is not going to do well overall. And I don't think libraries will be happy when they purchase something in say ePub or Kindle only and then have the other camp complaining to them.

Overall, the best solution would be for Amazon to support ePub with the time limited DRM. Then because of that, users will push for full ePub support and then we can kiss AZW goodbye. That would be awesome.

Yeah, thats it...leave the arguably (or not) biggest group of ebook device owners out library lending.

I don't think the Kindle should be left out. And there's a solution that would work and not impact anyone (except for longer wait times at the library). Get ADE on the Kindle and problem solved.

If this plays out like it looks, both groups will suffer and wait times will double. That's never good.

Even if Amazon adopted ePub for the Overdrive, libraries would likely have to buy more copies of the most popular titles because it is quite likely that their demand for eBooks just nearly doubled with the introduction of Kindle users.

ie - Waitlists that used to be 15 to 30 people just because 30 to 60 people so they'd have to buy more copies. My Overdrive system already does that. When they first put the books up and they see which titles build waitlists. Then about a week later the books with the biggest lists get additional copies added.

In other words, it is going to be yet another scrutiny of their budgets to try and match their money to obtain what people want. Again, libraries are quite used to doing that.
