some Qs re rooted firmware

hello all,
I have some questions, which after some search i failed to find answers to . I have already managed to root the device, put the latest 2.5.1 firmware on it. however,
1. I have no idea why everytime it goes back to the main screen, it asks which launcher should it use. this is frustrating and i would be happy if there is a workaround for this.
2. when opening PDF files, it asks between APDFviewer and viewer, and none of PDF files can be opened by APDFviewer, it tries but comes back to shelf list one second later. is it a known bug? i would really like to use the screen rotation capability of APDFviewer, so any suggestions?
3. in nookmarket, the only way i can go back to previous menus, or get out of, is to do a reset. is there a close of back function on this app? if so, can anyone help me with finding it?
4.i have managed to use Calibre to convert PDF files to EPub, but not CHM and DJVU files, is there any decent program to do so?

many thanks

nobody? since no one is answering, how can i know my device has even been rooted, i know i shall test ADB, but is there any sign that shows this even without doing that? I have made a mistake during the process of rooting, which was I have chosen the launcher after custom rom install, and i went to square one and redid everything, this time with rebooting after i see the launcher selection. but I am unsure what is going on .
could it be that the device has been not properly rooted? (sounds silly, but...)

Your device is most definitely rooted... however I believe on the nook dev site, there is a page dealing with this... From the sounds of it you are using the nooklauncher over the ru version. To set nooklauncher as default you have to push the apk packet they have on the site to your nook, overwriting the original home.apk. Then you wont need to continue to select which one you want to use. Hopefully this helps. Sorry I can't help with anything else.

You can press the home button. (The little "n" just above the touchscreen, in the center.)

thanks sjkevin, i have just figured that out. in fact, i realized it works everywhere, hadn't noticed it is actually a button though.

and thanks ReliQ5, but I want the russian version to be the permanent launcher, not the other way around.

also, I had never managed to uninstall the files from nookmarket, it just keep coming as uninstall not done. i have read that in order to update programs you have to first uninstall them, but it fails every time. I remember from early Eclair roms of nexus one, that if a program is cooked into the rom, then it is really hard to uninstall it.
any suggestions?

I just rooted a couple of days ago, and had the same issue with the launcher that you have. Do you have the NookLauncher (Home Icon) installed as well as the MyNook ru.Launcher. The ru.launcher comes with the softroot I believe.

I like the NookLauncher better, because you can clean up the home screen with sub-folders and customize the way you want it to look. If you choose that one, after you install it, you want to delete the ru.launcher via adb. Nooklauncher also has a button that sets it as the default.

Sorry, that doesn't really answer your question. Once you choose a launcher it is supposed to default to that in the Home Menu, but I had some trouble with that before I installed NookLauncher. It is irritating.

As for the pdfs loading there is a fix for that here:
http://nookdevs.com/APDFViewer

Not sure about the other questions, but I hope someone comes along soon to help.

I think there's a similar problem here. This softroot image has some of the apps in the system folder, which is a mistake.

If you get the android SDK, you can fix it by hand with adb, by manually deleting the apk from the system folder. After that, nookMarket will handle installing and updating the app properly. I'm not at home, so I can't check the exact command, but it would be something like this:
./adb shell rm /system/app/SomeApp.apk
./adb uninstall com.nookdevs.someapp

thank you so much for the wonderful advice, i have been to the APDF viewer wiki page, but i have forgot that i have seen the piece of info. many thanks.
as for sjkevin, i do have adb, and i have some some experience using it (i'm on macOS X), but may i ask, whether first command line removes the file from rom(is it possible?) and the second one removes the already installed program?

it does not work bytheway, it says no such file or directory, is there any way that i could browse folders to find out where they actually are? because filemanager does not allow me to browse system folders.

Yes, as I understand it. I'm no expert, though.

Edit:
I think the second one tries to remove the app (which was already removed by the first command), and then makes sure that any data files created by the application are also removed. If you don't do this, the data files might cause trouble when you re-install the program.

In general, to browse any folder, do something like "./adb shell ls /path/to/folder".

But for installed packages, the more useful command is:
./adb shell pm list packages -f

For example, maybe you tried to use nookMarket to update apdfViewer, but it failed?

Well, run "./adb shell pm list packages -f" and look for apdfViewer:
...
package:/system/app/apdfViewer.apk=com.googlecode.apdfviewer
...

Yeah, it's installed in the system folder (/system/app/), which we don't want. So, let's remove it:

./adb shell rm /system/app/apdfViewer.apk
./adb uninstall com.googlecode.apdfviewer

After this, you should be able to install it normally from nookMarket.

By the way, be very very careful what you remove from the system folder!

thanks man, I know how dangerous system folder is, so I tend to leave things I don't know about. I'll try it and report back, thanks again

UPDATE: if worked, but only after I copy/paste from the list i generated by packages command. it's odd, because i have typed exactly as it showed, but anyway, it appears that apdfviewer is removed, i rebooted and now will try to install it from market.
