@fragile,
I think something must have changed between Calibre v7.49 and v7.50 regarding TXT conversion. I used v7.49 to produce the epub shown above in my screencaps. So far, I haven't been able to reproduce it with v7.50.

I'm struggling to remember exactly which settings I used.

Convert - TXT Input - Paragraph style: 'single' (I think)
Convert - TXT Input - Formatting style: ?????
Convert - TXT Input - Preserve spaces: checked (definitely)
Convert - Look&Feel - ExtraCSS: body {font-family: monospace} (definitely)

I do remember I didn't put a lot of effort into choosing the parameters. I'll try a few more conversions in case I hit on a working combo.

In the meantime, I've dug the old epub out of the Recycle Bin and am posting here in case it's any use to you. You could try reporting the problem in the Calibre Bug system.

OK call off the dogs, I'm an idiot. There is nothing wrong with Calibre v7.50

@Jackie_w

I'm still struggling with this. I tried the settings you mentioned, fbreader still continues to truncate the spaces. With okular though I was able to see that the spaces are indeed preserved.

Which reader did you use in the screenshot you put up? Was it fbreader itself?

One more thing is that the rfc text is preformatted with hard-line breaks but your screenshot seems to show a fine formatting irrespective of the line breaks.
I tried all the paragraph formatting options I wasn't able to achieve your results. Was the screenshot from a PB302 or a larger device?

As I said back in post #7, you have to use the PB's AdobeViewer app, not fbreader, to get epub css formatting to display correctly.

It was because of all the hard linebreaks that I chose the
Code:
Convert - TXT Input - Paragraph style: single
You could try to reflow all the paragraphs with a different setting which would assume each paragraph is separated by a blank line, however, all those "ascii-drawn flowcharts" would mess up if you did. It really depends how much manual effort you want to put in before you convert. The conversion I did had no manual pre-editing at all.

No the screencaps are from a PB360, i.e. 5" in landscape, viewed at AdobeViewer's smallest zoom-level.

Did you try loading the epub I attached in post #16.

Thanks for the info. I opened them with AdobeViewer and the spacing was fine. Putting the device in landscape mode made the line breaks more tolerable.

However one problem is that the font is way too light and thin. Is there a way to ^bold^ it? I don't see an option for this in adobeviewer. Perhaps it could be done by software over epub?

I agree that Adobe's default monospace font is very wishy-washy. There are several improvements you could consider.
  1. The simplest is to force the existing default font to use its bold variety. This can be achieved simply by adding the necessary CSS to Calibre's ExtraCSS box when you do the TXT to EPUB conversion.
    Code:
    body {font-family: monospace; font-weight: bold; line-height: 0.5em;}
  2. If that still isn't satisfactory, you could also try overriding the default monospace font with one you like better, e.g. Liberation Mono or Bitstream Vera Mono (both free I think). Both of these have a full set of Mono fonts (regular, italic, bold, bolditalic). Your particular book doesn't have any bold or italics, but the next one might.

    Once you've found your font(s) copy the .ttf file(s) onto your PB302 into the /system/fonts directory in internal memory.

    Convert your TXT to EPUB again in Calibre, this time with slightly different ExtraCSS (using Liberation Mono regular as an example):
    Code:
    @font-face {font-family: monospace; font-weight: all; font-style: all; src: url(res:///mnt/ext1/system/fonts/LiberationMono-Regular.ttf);}
    body {font-family: monospace; line-height: 0.5em;}
    These filenames and directories are case-sensitive, so make sure whatever you type in ExtraCSS matches EXACTLY the file path to the fonts on your PB302.

    When you read this EPUB on the PB302 it will use Liberation Mono rather than the Adobe default mono to render the book.

    If you want to go even bolder, replace the LiberationMono-Regular.ttf filename in the ExtraCSS with the bold version instead, LiberationMono-Bold.ttf

  3. Depending on what version of the firmware you're using on your PB302 there is a third method (14.2, 15.2 are OK, 15.3 isn't). The results will be exactly the same as the second method but you don't need to put the @font-face statements into every EPUB. Instead they are stored in a single fixed .css file on the reader. If you want to investigate, search for "hacked AdobeViewer" in this forum.

Ouch! My PB302 doesn't mount over USB any more...

@jackie_w

I tried method 3 and it worked fine. I tried a couple of times editing the userStyle1.css for correcting the line-spacing. I would have probably done this about 3 times. All of a sudden an unrelated problem started happening: When I plug the device into USB, my computer seems to recognize only the miniSD card. Earlier it used to recognize, PB's root directory (the one that contains /system) as well. Now I seem to have lost access to this drive.

Initially I thought it probably is some issue with my comp and had both the device and the computer powered off and then retried still it wouldn't recognize PBs drive. It only recognized the miniSD card. I also tried rebooting the device and then removing the miniSD. Then I attached it to the comp, still doesn't detect PBs drive. I infer that the USB is fine as the device is recognized however the disk alone doesn't mount. IOW, it shows up as F: in my comp, but when I open it, it complains that there is no media in it.
So this kind of tells me there is some problem mounting the device. I switched over to poterm in the PB and checked its mounts. It had the drives mounted correctly. (IOW: I was able to see both /mnt/ext1 and /mnt/ext2. ext1 is the one that doesn't get detected on the comp.) The PB302 itself doesn't seem to have trouble accessing the drive. It is able to access the books in it et all. However it doesn't seem to be able to export it over usb.

To debug furthur I again had it connected through usb, the drive didn't show up as usual. I then disconnected the usb and through poterm got the output of dmesg. Here is what I see:

I'm not sure if this signifies sectors going bad... but its way to early for the disks to be going bad. I've had the device just for a couple of months now. All that I've done is copied over a few books.

Any suggestions pointers will help.

Oh dear. I'm afraid that log is way beyond my tech abilities. My unix is non-existent. Have you tried more obvious things like:
- a different USB cable
- making sure the cable is connected directly, not via a USB hub
- a different PC
- remove the hacked AdobeViewer, although I haven't had any problems with the 15.2 version on my PB360.

It can not be USB cable or the connection to the computer, since the miniSD mounts fine over it and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the hacked adobeviewer. The kernel seems to be complaining about stray IRQs and sector read errors. (Normally though a bad sector would trigger a "hard" error which I don't see.). I'll post this issue in a seperate thread with an appropriate title so that someone in the know would be able to help.

For fragile or anyone stuck with this problem. Yes, fbreader is very nasty and compresses all spaces, tabs, wide space, utf8 non-breaking space ... simply everything.
But you can fool it with SOFT-HYPHEN ! This is utf8 0x00AD symbol. Even though fbreader doesn't display it, it treats as non-space. This means that spaces around soft-hyphen are not contracted.

I used this short python script to transform my txt files:
Quote:
import sys
import codecs

text = codecs.open(sys.argv[1],'r','utf-8').read()
#text = unicode(text)
text = text.replace(u' ',u' \u00ad \u00ad')
codecs.open(sys.argv[1],"w",'utf-8-sig').write(text)
After applying this script, the spaces appear as doubled in normal viewer. But in fbreader they look as they are supposed to. Script converts the file in-place (==MAKE BACKUPS!!!).

My problem was with formating songs with chords for guitar playing - fbreader destroyed the formatting. This conversion of txt files solved my problem.

Enjoy!
