Quick question... is there a keyboard shortcut to open the manage series dialog box? Or have I just missed that info somewhere.

You can set a keyboard shortcut by going to the configuration dialog for that Manage Series plugin. Preferences->Plugins->User Interface Action plugins, select the plugin and click "Customise plugin". Or if you have Plugin Updater on your toolbar, either ctrl+click on the button or open it and choose "All plugins" to select from the list and click Customise plugin again.

Then just type the shortcut you want in the box - e.g. CTRL+1 or whatever. Obviously be sure not to conflict with one of Calibre's keyboard shortcuts or those of other plugins you have installed.

Thanks Kiwi, quick answer too! I didn't realise I could customise the plugins from the updater. I'll fix a few others up now too. I still feel like such a newby, and I've been using calibre for ages.

You are welcome.

And yes I found that the plugins I customise the "most often" are the "user plugins" which plugin updater of course only lists. I found it faster to change a number of settings from that filtered plugin updater screen than navigating through the "every plugin" screen you get in Preferences->Plugins. For many of the plugins we add a "Customize plugin" menu item at the bottom as another convenience. However for some we have no submenu (like this one) so as a user it is less obvious that the plugin can be customised.

Ok, before I discuss changing the plugin, let's briefly clarify the requirement.

Firstly the thread you referenced is an "old" one, things move fast in Calibre world. Since that time meme developed the Kindle Collections plugin, and that offers a very easy way to create collections per author or other criteria.

Now if I understand the "issue" correctly, it is that on a Kindle if you sort by Author, the results are displayed in reverse publication date order (most recent first). So your request and that thread above is based around fudging the publication date so that the books will appear in series order descending, rather than the last in the series at the top. Have I got all that part correct?

The approach I and many others have taken is to not use Sort by Author on the Kindle. Once you get more than a page or two of books it is pretty unmanageable anyways. So instead we use sort by Title, and have a collection per author. We name the collections with a special prefix like _ or ~ to ensure that alphabetically as far as a title sort is concerned they appear at the top of the list. So in my case I create collections using meme's Kindle Collections plugin based on the author sort field in Calibre, with a ~ prefix, and a very special custom collection called _Reading_ which will always appear at the very top that I add the current book I am reading into.

How does this help you with series you may ask? Well the trick is that you want the series name to appear in the title of the book, so that Wheel of Time 01 - xxx is displayed before Wheel of Time 02 - xxx etc. This was suggested on that thread above.

What I didn't see mentioned was the best way to approach that. That is to use a metadata plugboard (and not hack your title name inside Calibre which is a crude suggestion some people do). So once your plugboard is setup, when you send books to your Kindle the series name/number is prefixed before the title of the book when displayed on the Kindle. Note this doesn't affect how your books look in Calibre, nor the filename of the books, just the internal metadata stored with the MOBI files that the Kindle reads to display on the screen.

So why do all this? It means that you don't ever need to muck around with publication dates, you can keep them at their genuine values and not "wreck" them by putting them in the opposite order. If a new book comes out in a series, you don't ever have to fiddle with it's date either.

Does that all make sense, or are there reasons why you don't want to use collections. It just sounds the "wrong" approach to me to try to muck around with the publication date. Instead it is just one click on the Kindle Collections plugin every time you send new books to your Kindle, and then a Kindle restart to have the new collections file displayed, job done...
Sorry for the slow reply - been away all week.

Yes- what you are saying makes perfect sense, however i still prefer to do it my way for the following reason. The kindle has no way of displaying publication date, so for my purposes it is completely redundant (as I only read e-books on the kindle).

The way i manage things (for example) is i create a collection called "discworld", or "hitchikers guide" and then add all the books to that.
The only reason I sort by Author is to keep the order as set from the publication date (which I currently set manually in Calibre). I don't want to have to change the titles etc as this a) looks messy and b) contains redundant data that is stored elsewhere in Calibre. The publication date, while a nice to have, is of no relevance as compared to everything else, and i really don't mind changing it for collections of the same series, since i can base it all upon the first book's publication date, giving me a good idea of the time it was produced.

Does that make sense?

I'm new to plugins and while trying to use this I ran across some ambiguous / erroneous usage that I believe needs to be addressed.

I was downloading metadata on the Diablo novels, specifically, in correct chronological order:
  1. The Sin War:
    1. Birthright
    2. Scales of the Serpent
    3. The Veiled Prophet
  2. Demonsbane
  3. The Black Road
  4. Legacy of Blood
  5. The Kingdom of Shadow

However, I noticed two book covers had "#1" printed on them. As well as another saying "#3" - but it didn't match up to the downloaded series 3rd book. So it was pretty obvious that there was an error somewhere. This was confirmed by a few other obvious errors. So I went to Diablo Wiki to check out the correct order. Based on this information I began using this plugin to correct the series metadata.

What I found though is that you cannot delete a Series from within the plugin dialog. At least, not by marking a couple of books and then deleting the name. Except, the dialog does accept this as valid input - but closing the dialog and returning to calibre's main window, the series remains.

Nor can you do the same sort of thing by editing an existing series name. So "Diablo The Sin War" series, when deleting "Diablo" but leaving the remainder and pressing Enter is accepted by the plugin. But, once again, it reverts to either the original information or grabs the top entry in the combo box.

I think I ran across something with the numbering as well, in a custom column, but I cannot recall what happened. This was the very first issue I came across and just assumed user error and went back in to re-correct them.

Now, I must admit, all of the above is user error. I should have used the lock & delete icons (for the numbering error that I cannot recall) and obviously entered an entirely new series name for the other. Despite this I guess I assumed that if this wasn't possible / acceptable usage the plugin would return an error message. As opposed to accepting the input and then cancelling the changes.

Hope this helps.

@Sabardeyn

I'm not exactly sure what all your issues are.

You are correct that this plugin is not designed to remove series values - it is for adding/renaming series, not removing items from a series. That is intentional given it is just as easy to blank the series cell in the library view (or use the bulk edit dialog). I would have thought that removing a series from a book would be one of the least used functions. So I don't see anything changing in that regard.

As for the editing an existing series name, I can't replicate the behaviour you describe. Certainly if I have a "Harry Potter" series, I remove "Harry" from the series name in the combo box then straight away the new series name column changes and when I click ok "Potter" is the new series name. If you can replicate some other issue with this and detail the exact steps then I will happily take a look.

As for your last issue with the custom column, again without some details there is nothing I can do. No-one else has reported any issues with this plugin but that is not to say there might not be an issue there, particularly since secondary series custom columns would be pretty rare in the user base.

My ultimate point is: These are poor programming practices and should be corrected within the plugin. Negative feedback is required when a user attempts to perform an operation that exceeds the programming parameters.

To prevent posting a wall of text that most users are not going to be interested in, I'm going to try and vastly over-simplify here:

The plugin assumes that anything similar to a series and seriesindex column, whether a unique or derived column, is the same and treats it as such, with regards to the text and/or the index portion - across all columns (note: the plural - this affects all such columns!). The plugin assumes that the user has one, and only one, set of books that belong to one, and only one, unique data set - not field(s) or column(s). Furthermore it assumes that their is one, and only one, unique data set as input and as output.

The user may or may not know that the books selected for use with this plugin are a single unique data set; however, they may need to resolve these books into separate data sets. But as programmed the plugin forces conformity to an unknown and unrequested standard imposed on the user without previous knowledge or prior notification.

(Further explanation under the spoiler.)

Spoiler:
My database, using a cut-down version of my previously posted example, appears as:

Code:
Title Universe Series
--------------------------------------------------------------
Birthright Diablo[1] Diablo The Sin War[1]
...
Demonsbane Diablo[1] Diablo The Sin War[1]
When altering one column within the plugin and pressing OK, your plugin alters both.

For instance changing one column's index changes both columns accordingly. Additionally, the text portion of any column is assumed to be the same through out - whether or not this is the case (example: Universe[1], SeriesOne[1]; Universe[1]SeriesTwo[1] = Universe[1], SeriesOne[1]; Universe[1]SeriesOne[2]), regardless of which column is being edited.

So when I tried to create this:
Code:
Title Universe Series
--------------------------------------------------------------
Birthright Diablo[1] The Sin War[1]
...
Demonsbane Diablo[4]
what I ended up with is
Code:
Title Universe Series
--------------------------------------------------------------
Birthright Diablo[1] Diablo The Sin War[1]
...
Demonsbane Diablo[4] Diablo The Sin War[4]
Note how the series' name did not change (I know you say you cannot replicate, nor have I, but this still pertains in general, see next paragraph below). More importantly, the plugin threw back in the series name and index after I deleted it from the second book in the example above.

Lastly, just now, I tried to replicate the failure to change "Diablo The Sin War" to "The Sin War" by deleting "Diablo" and pressing OK. In this attempt, I just selected the books shown highlighted in blue to correct the series name. These were the only ones that needed correction. (Please see included image.) My exact steps were:
  • In calibre, search for "diablo". 8 matches returned.
  • Items 2-4 were what I wanted, I highlighted these.
  • Clicked on the Manage Series icon on the toolbar.
  • Series Column: Series was already selected within the plugin.
  • Set cursor into field Series: Diablo The Sin War.
  • Deleted "Diablo" by pressing the Backspace key five times.
  • Accepted corrected series name by pressing Enter.
  • Clicked OK button.

However, please take special note of the numbering in both the Universe and Series columns. Everything was numbered correctly to start out, I just needed to correct the series name. That is the only field I touched in any way. So how did they end up as books 8-10?

@Sabardeyn - you accuse me of poor programming practises and then expect me to show any interest in what else you have to say? Good luck with writing your own plugins.

If the plugin doesn't do what you need exactly the way you want it to, write your own.... you don't have to use it. Better still, buy a program to do what you want. That's right, this one is FREE. The plugins have increased calibre's ease of use, and suggestions made are usually responded to very quickly. To accuse Kiwidude of poor programming seems a bit rude to be honest.

I finally found out why some of my series numbers in my library mysteriously were changed. It happens when I use the Manage Series plugin to change a custom series column.

Most (if not all) of the following is obvious user error because of the blind faith I have it the basic rename a series function of this plugin.
  1. I start by sorting the custom series column in my library, see attached.
  2. I highlighted and called up the Manage Series Plugin. It shows my three series I have highlighted being renamed, I disregarded this (big mistake #1) because I want to rename my custom series.
  3. I then moved to the custom series column, because this is what I wanted renamed.
  4. In the past renaming regular series the series list came up in the order I had it sorted in and the series indexes were never a problem. Because of my blind faith I didn't pay attention to the list order. (big mistake #2) I entered a new name and clicked OK.
  5. I assumed that only the custom series was going to be affected by this action (big mistake #3).
Take a look at the outcome attached to see what happened. My big assumption was that, like the metadata search and replace feature, renaming the custom series was in no way going to alter the normal series column.

At least the mystery for me is solved and I can change my workflow accordingly. For renaming custom series I will stick with metadata search and replace. I'm not sure there is anything here that needs tending to but I put my idiocy out there as detailed as I could so you could decide for yourself.

@Walt - I wonder if your issue is similar to what was reported previously in this thread above (by someone who had such a crap attitude that I didn't bother investigating). Rather the opposite of your useful analysis of course.

Multiple series columns. Ugh. I was in two minds about how or whether to even support them in this plugin, and clearly you have had enough problems to decide they are not worth the pain they cause. I haven't tried your scenario to see for myself (I don't use multiple series columns myself) so I'm not 100% clear on the issues as yet. As I possibly misunderstand it there seems to be two problems:

1. That when you flip to manipulate a different series column, changes are still being applied to the "initial" series column (unless you "remember" to lock the values before switching)?

2. Something funky may be going on in the sort order.

I'll be honest - if we can't figure out a way to make this "work" that is acceptable for people with multiple series columns, I would rather rip it out and go back to just supporting the main series. However if there is a way to make it work then I can quickly look at it.

This seems to be the main issue that I didn't pay attention to since I was going for the other tab. It isn't totally unexpected behavior with multiple tab windows.

Weird sorting because I had three different trilogies making up one overall series.

I love this plugin, have 1000+ series and rarely use it for the the custom series column. Since I rarely use it I never noticed that I may have been accidentally altering the main series columns while using it.

I have no problem with you removing the second tab. If you go to supporting just the main series the rest of the problems go away.
