iPad kindle app

I have downloaded books in "mobi" and "epub" (non Amazon source), transferred them to "itunes" using "Calibre" BUT I am not able to transfer them to the Kindle app on my ipad. Could some kind person explain to me in baby steps, how to achieve my goal. I previously had iBooks app installed, I tried uninstalling it, but to no avail.

You can't view epub books in Kindle app but can in iBooks, Stanza, and BlueFire readers. I am sure there are other readers available too. I think that "non-Amazon" books cannot be placed in Kindle reading app by Amazon's design. But I am not a app designer so may be talking "out my butt", LOL
Can't you uncheck ibooks app in itunes and remove it from your ipad when you sync?
Actually I think you can directly transfer e-books from Calibre to you device without going through iTunes, but maybe not. It's been a while since I transferred books through iTunes.

See the attached image.

Note: This sideloading process works for non-DRMed books. You can use the Kindle app to directly download purchased books. I use calibre to convert books, but I've never used it to sideload so I can't help you there. But the method below is REALLY easy.

1. Connect your iPad to the computer and open iTunes.
2. Select your iPad in iTunes and select the Apps tab.
3. Locate and select Kindle under File Sharing: Apps.
4. Now simply select and drag your MOBI book from you computer File Explorer to File Sharing: Kindle Documents in iTunes.
5. Sync and your all done!

The same process works for a lot of iPad apps including several eBook readers.

Books in .mobi format should be transferable to the Kindle app on your iPad. The easiest way to do this is:
1) Click on your iPad icon in iTunes
2) Go to Apps
3) scroll to the bottom, you should see the File Sharing area, and the Kindle app.
4) Drag the .mobi files to that window, and drop. They should transfer to the Kindle app.

The epub files cannot be read by the Kindle app. You can read them in iBooks, or use Calibre to convert them to .mobi.

It's good to learn something new everyday, I didn't know you could transfer non Amazon books into Kindle. Thanks for primer!
My iPad 2 and cover are "prepared for shipping" so will probably go out today. I wonder if they are coming from China or if there is a warehouse supply here in the states? Will know when tracking info is received.

Hopefully they are warehoused in the USA. Probably a good thing you ordered one early as there might be bottlenecks in production in the future due to the Japan disasters. I think the iPads are assembled in China, but a lot of the parts are made in Japan and that could be a problem for Apple and a lot of electronics companies in the months ahead.

yes, I agree, I believe my iPad 1 shipped directly from China. I was surprised! Silly me, thought it was coming from Cupertino! LOL

Lots of electronics do come from Japan so I expect not only will supply be diminished but costs to the consumer will go up as well.

So sad for Japanese people, I wish them God Speed and strength. Since we live on the west coast, it got my hubby and me talking again about stratagies for survival. We don't live near the ocean but we are in a strong eathquake area and only a mile from the Columbia river, elevation 100 feet. A huge surge up the river could potentially be threatening. Luckily if a tsunomi were to hit Seaside (our nearest coastal town, 20 miles away), we would have time to literally "head for the hills". It's always good to have a emergency plan and most importantly, supplies!
