Preview Sample (Sony) - The Dreamseller - The Calling [Literary Fiction]

The Dreamseller - The Calling: A Novel is the slightly unwieldy title of a literary fiction-looking novel by Dr. Augusto Cury, free courtesy of publisher Atria.

Turns out it's one of those stealth glorified preview samples. Sorry about that.

This may be Christian fiction, as Sony's other author listings say Dr. Cury normally publishes books with Thomas Nelson, who are a mainly Christian publisher who sometimes handle secular stuff, and the synopsis tends a bit towards the "inspirational"-looking side.

Anyway, free in the Sony store to non-Canadians, and doesn't look like a self-pub, since it also exists in a discounted hardcover (rather than one of those CreateSpace print-on-demand jobbies which usually are full-priced).

ETA: non self-pub. Publisher's Weekly review on the hardcover version says this is his 4th novel and says it's overall okay with occasional mild preachiness and "absurdist humor".

ETA 2: Oooh, winner of "China’s 2009 Weishanu Award for Best Foreign Novel" if the Author blurb is to be believed. Says he's very popular in Brazil, if any Brazilians around can confirm/deny.

Description
Wherever he goes, the dreamseller enchants, stirs up trouble and inspires his listeners to search for the most important thing: the heart of the human soul. Every person he meets is someone who has abandoned their dreams and is struggling through life: a professor who has stopped pursuing his passions, an alcoholic who has no family, the elderly who have lost their zest for life. Through his questioning and wisdom, the dreamseller helps them to look into their silent hearts and get to the root of their unhappiness.

The Dreamseller: The Calling is moving, entertaining and ultimately inspiring. This book will make you laugh and cry, but above all, it will make you reflect on the purpose of your life, value others and become empowered to believe in your dreams.

Sony is very bad to skip labeling their samples as such. Then, inkmesh reports them as real books.

There also isn't any way to return or delete the blasted thing, once in your sony library, that I can see.

I suppose one could always complain to Customer Service, but they'd probably accidentally delete something you wanted to keep.

This, in part, is why I no longer get Smashwords coupon freebies on my main account unless it's something by an author I know I respect enough to have cluttering up the main bookshelf with my actual pay purchases.

Turns out most of the size of that sample file is taken up by a back advert which says to contact a simonandschuster.com email address for an advance copy.

I'm feeling mildly tempted to try.

I think it's another case of someone lazily taking print materials from some sort of paper promo packet and turning them into e-editions without even bothering to look.

Anyway, thanks for the notice.

Stupid unmarked sales-boosting glorified stealth samples. I will never buy a book which uses them and will side-eye any publisher who doesn't explicitly mark their previews.
