Oppenheim, E. Phillips: Mysterious Mr. Sabin. V1. 3 Sep 2011

Edward Phillips Oppenheim (October 22, 1866 – February 3, 1946), was an English novelist, in his lifetime a major and successful writer of genre fiction including thrillers .A best-selling author of novels, short stories, magazine articles, translations, and plays, Oppenheim published over 150 books. He is considered one of the originators of the thriller genre, his novels also range from spy thrillers to romance, but all have an undertone of intrigue.

Excerpt
“A young lady called here about an hour ago, and asked for you. Johnson informed her that you might be home shortly, and she said she would wait. Johnson, perhaps imprudently, admitted her, and she is in the study, my lord.”
“A young lady in my study at this time of night!” Wolfenden exclaimed, incredulously. “Who is she, and what is she, and why has she come at all? Have you gone mad, Selby?”

Although written in the late 19th century (1898) this novel actually foreshadows many of his WW1-era intrigue novels.

Fairly standard set up of his, 3 friends spot a mysterious man and a beautiful young woman while dining in a fancy restaurant, and they try to get to know her, but complications ensue, because as always in these sort of novels, she has a secret.
