External cards. Lots more space. I've never noticed an access problem with anything except movies when using an external card on some devices.

Main memory for my books, and a 2 GB SD card for music.

Not if you can't get to them; I've already experienced one non-booting device... (I back all my books up to PC when I purchase them, but don't keep all of them on my ereader.)

I used to keep all my books on an SD card, but it drained the battery quickly and significantly slowed down my ereader. Now I keep about two dozen books in the ereader's internal memory.

I got, I don't know, 1.5 or 2 GB of inner memory in my PRS 650 (right ?)
It's more than enough for just ebooks. So I shouldn't be getting an external card any time soon.

I use the 1 Gb micro card that came with my new mobile phone (where I'll never be using it) - I doubt I would've gone out and bought a card just for my e-reader itself.

I use my sd card more for backup, I use the internal memory of my Sony for a good lot of my books. I have deleted some that I knew I was unlikely going to read again. But those get replaced by new books. But I still have plenty of memory left so I'm not worried.

Currently rated at around 100,000 erase/rewrite cycles. If you erased and replaced books from the same memory blocks once a day, every day, it would take you over 270 years to hit that number. Or, just for the sake of argument, let's say that 100,000 cycles number is overly optimistic by an order of magnitude-- that means you are left with "only" 27 years of daily rewrites.

Books I've purchased that are sync'd from the "cloud" go in main memory, anything side-loaded goes on the SD card.

Internal memory only for me. I only keep about 80 books, +-, in it at a time, my TBR pile, so I have plenty of room and they are still in Calibre if my 505 dies. And if my 505 dies, I have bigger worries than being concerned about having to re-transfer books to a new reader.

Likewise, with my Sony PRS-650 - I haven't needed to use either of its two card slots. If I decide to buy any books then I might use the external memory, but meanwhile I just read free books.

External SD card only for me. I need to be able to swap content between devices painlessly.

It is interesting to see all the responses. I usually keep mine on my SDHC card or on the MS Pro Duo card (though I guess I have yet to really put any on those). I am curious as to how much of a delay accessing books on a SDHC card would have as opposed to solid state memory (main memory) if the SDHC is at least a class 6 or above...since those cards have sufficient speed for high definition video; not to mention the average epub file is approx 500kb or so.

With regards to battery life, has anyone been able to see a quantifiable difference between the SDHC storage and main memory storage (e.g.: several days/pages fewer of battery life on external storage media)?

I store all of my books on a USB drive and I transfer them to the internal memory for reading. I do not use the external memory card slots.
