DRM and Calibre

Hello,
I'm turning some books into ebooks. Some in epub format, some in mobi. Most of them will be DRM free, but a couple of them will need it. I'm using Calibre to convert epub into mobi, with excellent results. In fact, I love Calibre! The point is... is there a way to apply DRM to the mobi file generated with Calibre?

Thanks in advance
Bob

There are solutions to remove DRM, but I don't think there are solutions to add it... Why would you want to do that in the first place?

It will be sold in Amazon. In the first place... does in really need to be DRMd to be sold in Amazon? It's the only reason to DRM it!

Thanks for your fast reply!!!

By the way... sorry for such a silly question. The point is, I've been writing and also designing books for years, but I'm new in the ebook area ;-)

Not for my books, thanks ... it's just in case a certain author may want it. Not even sure about it.

DRM is a bad thing because it doesn't do jack to stop the bad guys from doing anything they want to do, but it does stop the legitimate customers from doing the things they need to do. You want to hurt the bad guys and help the good guys, not the other way around.

Hey Worldwalker, 100 % agree with you, that's why I don't want DRM in my books, and advice no to use it. I just wanted to know in case I find some stubborn bloke. I love your phrase "DRM is to rights management like DDT is to pest management." Immediately adopted.

The way to deal with stubborn blokes is to be even more stubborn.

A note for anyone who is baffled at the connection: Pest management exterminates pests (at least it had better ... if I call them because I have bugs, I want those bugs dead, not taught to march in formation). Rights management exterminates rights. There is a very close, and very disturbing, parallel there.

If you run into those stubborn blokes, LadyFitz is right: out-stubborn them. Point out that although the Harry Potter books have never been released as ebooks (the author has a fondness for paper), the last one was in fact out as an ebook before the pbook was on the market. It was an inside job, of course, but the point is, if someone wants an illicit ebook, it's not hard for them to get it or make it. It inconveniences the guy who just bought a Sony to replace his broken Kindle, and now can't read his books anymore. That guy will either give up and not buy more books from the offenders, or he will learn to strip DRM, and in either case, it's doing the author no good and possibly considerable harm.

Actually, it's a simple matter of common sense. We all know that every software is crackable for those who want to crack it, or downloaded already cracked. Same with ebooks. But the common user will have all the problems described, all the problems he/she should NOT have. As for the stubborn... well... I wouldn't fight fire with fire mo chara Fitzgerald. Taichi practitioner... prefer to work him/her 'round and make him/her aware the he/she... is just nuts!

This is a great board, I'm really glad to find you. Hope I can help someone in the future!
