Power off problem

Hi,

I just got a Kobo wifi a couple of days ago, I've noticed I occasionally seem to have a problem when powering off the device. Sorry if this is confusing, I have a hard time explaining things sometimes.

If I'm reading an epub and hold down power to turn it off, about half the time instead of displaying the cover in gray as it usually does it will instead be a white outline of the cover and the "Power is off" message will also only be the outline and fairly hard to make out. The whole screen will look sort of "glitched". If I turn the device back on at this point, any progress I made in the book I was reading will be reset. For instance if I started at chapter 10 and read until I was on chapter 15 when turning it back on I would start at chapter 10 again.

To prevent losing progress like that I have started hitting home before turning it off, taking me to the books I'm reading menu. If I get this error when powering off on the menu, instead of giving me a white and messed up cover, it instead continues showing the menu exactly as it normally appears, giving the impression that it wasn't turned off, however if I go to turn if off again at that point assuming it didn't properly power off, it will turn on, going through the whole boot up process.

I just wanted to see if this could be an issue with my Kobo in particular, or if this is a software problem, or really any ideas or solutions at I could try to get this fixed.

Thanks for any help.

The only know deal with the Kobo WiFi is that a short press does not send it to sleep when you are using sideloaded books. It happens that you can go to sleep from the I'm Reading menu.

If you can try a reader at a bricks and mortar store, you can see how it is supposed to work and see if it is different from the way your reader is working. As it it is a new reader, you may want to do an exchange.

jorgej,

I get something very similar on my Kobo Wi Fi occasionally. I don't lose any of my progress like you are and I don't get a strange glitchy looking screen, but I do get the whole deal where you hold the power button to power off and the screen just sits there. Doesn't change. You think it is still on, but you hold the power button again and the machine starts back up as if it was off. It only happens occasionally, but a very similar issue.

Because my screen just sits on the book or menu without changing, doesn't go all weird, and I do not lose any progress I just figure it as a problem (not serious) with the whole loading of the Powered Off screen during the shut down process. Yours sounds like it might be an actual problem and not a mere quirk/minor issue though because your Kobo is actually forgetting and going strange.

EDIT UPDATE: OK, I take the above back: mine HAS fogged my current position in a book when this improper shutdown takes place.

It happened last night. So I turned it back on, and then turned it back off properly. Today, I went to read my book (Doubt: A History) and it was back to where I had started my previous session NOT where I left off.

This is the first time the improper shutdown has actually affected my place in a book.

Yep, in the three months that I've had my wi-fi reader it had something similar to this fault once. I pressed the power and it did nothing. So I pressed and held it down again and the machine booted up as if it was off. My last sessions reading didn't set a new bookmark, so I was back to the page where I had started that night.

Only did it once though.

ltr, that is once each for us and jorgej seems to be having it frequently.

I'm now wondering if the Kobo Wi Fi models don't muff the shutdown procedure every once in awhile causing these problems. The more times you turn it on/off the more your chances of muffing the shutdown.

I cycle mine on and off about 3-5 times during the day (an average and a guess) and I have had the improper shutdown about every 2-4 days as a result. (I got the Kobo in mid DEC, and I can remember 5-6 of these events off the top of my head).

I've lost my bookmarks a few times - but only a couple pages, never chapters worth. Seems to be on sideloaded books.

Well thanks for all the replies. I phoned Indigo tonight and the Kobo Specialist in the store said he hadn't heard of any similar complaints and suggested I bring it in for an exchange.

It was happening about half the time I turned mine off, so hopefully it doesn't start getting more frequent with yours.

Thanks again.

Hi Jorgej,

If you hold down the power button for too long (IIRC it's 8 seconds), the device will initiate an immediate hardware shutoff. I.e. the equivalent of keeping the power button on your computer held down.

While on it's way to this hardware shutoff, the device registers the regular power off command as well since it's about 5 seconds IIRC (sorry, I don't remember the exact timings offhand).

So you're probably seeing the device shutting off the hardware BEFORE it's finished drawing the power off screen from the previous command to power off (hence the glitchy image).

So the question would be: why is it doing this infrequently even when people do not hold the power button for 8 seconds?
