Cold Fusion? Again? Really?

(PhysOrg.com) -- Few areas of science are more controversial than cold fusion, the hypothetical near-room-temperature reaction in which two smaller nuclei join together to form a single larger nucleus while releasing large amounts of energy. In the 1980s, Stanley Pons and Martin Fleishmann claimed to have demonstrated cold fusion - which could potentially provide the world with a cheap, clean energy source - but their experiment could not be reproduced. Since then, all other claims of cold fusion have been illegitimate, and studies have shown that cold fusion is theoretically implausible, causing mainstream science to become highly speculative of the field in general.......

It seems odd, after the mess the last time a press conference was called for cold fusion, that they have chosen to do it this way.

It might be that they have something. It's impossible to tell. I will be very surprised if it turns out to be a real effect.

But I would really like to be surprised...

The discovery of genuine cold fusion would be the end of the world. Post-scarcity makes a lot of capitalists nervous, and a bunch of smaller countries would go BOOM trying to replicate it themselves.

The search would be more productive if instead of "near-room-temperature" they shot for something more practical, like a few hundred degrees Fahrenheit.

If fusion is possible at 'low' temperatures, it seems highly unlikely that the difference between room temperature and a few hundred degrees Fahrenheit would make any difference at all...

Well, except "cold fusion" as supposedly defined is a controlled reaction. Certainly not something that would take place spontaneously in nature and not without certain conditions being maintained.

I doubt it even exists, but if it does the odds of going "boom" are low.

and saw this ....
