Indi books using Kindle for iPhone

Hi, all!

Got this query from a reader:

"I’m trying to discover how to load independent ebooks, such as from Closed Circle, into my iPhone’s Kindle for iPhone app. I can sync just fine for Kindle ebooks purchased from Amazon, to either the Kindle for PC or for iPhone apps. I’ve found how to copy the files (in the needed format) into the ebooks folder used by Kindle for PC on my computer, so it finds the files. But so far, no luck hunting up how to do this for Kindle for iPhone. I’ve also found how to copy files from Closed Circle into iTunes, so that iTunes will sync and upload these into iBooks on the iPhone. (!Ay-ay-ay!) Only Kindle for iPhone is the sticking point. There must be a way, surely, but I have not found the secret decoder ring or club handshake. "

Never having used an iphone or anything like, I haven't a clue. Can anybody here help us out?

As always, thanks in advance.

You must jailbreak your iphone. Then you can copy kindle books directly to the Kindle installation directory. When you load the kindle, it will automatically find new books.

As zhleonix said, all you need to do is get the MOBI files into the right folder on the iPhone. It is possible to do this without jailbraking the iphone using iPhone Explorer, which is available for Mac and Windows. See You CAN Sideload into Kindle App without Jailbreaking

I'd stick with ePub format and iBooks if I were you. Even though there are "fiddles" to allow you to load your own books into Kindle for iPhone, it is (IMHO) just not worth the effort when it's so easy to load your own content into iBooks (or other iPhone reading apps).

Actually, I'd stick with Bluefire Reader on an iPhone. The forced margins in iBooks on such a mall screen are awful.

Yes, the borders in iBooks are obtrusive on the iPhone, you're right. It works very well indeed on the larger iPad screen, though.

I use Stanza and I can just drag and drop the files into the Stanza app folder using iTunes.

I love Stanza because it is so easy to control the brightness of the screen and the font size.

The margins are still too large on the iPad screen. You have way too much wasted space there. The Kindle app is even worse. It has slightly more margin space then iBooks.

But do you like Stanza for all the other things it gets wrong?

The main advantage of using the Kindle app is the Locations feature. Since syncing via Whispernet is only available for books on the Kindle store, what can I do with sideloaded books? Well I just take a note of the location of my last read position. This allows me to easily continue reading from PC, Mac, iPhone or my K3. Sure enough iBooks can sync positions between idevices but there isn't a desktop client available.

Plus the Kindle app is great, fast and simple, and maximises screen real estate. Built in dictionary too!

Reminds me that I had better backup the Kindle app in case Amazon block sideloading in future versions!

You cannot sync sideloaded books. The books must be on Amazon's server to support whispernet.
