Who wants a chat program on the iLIad?

I've gotten close to having a releasable version of Gaim (now known as pidgin)

Quote:
Pidgin is an instant messaging program for Windows, Linux, BSD, and other Unixes. You can talk to your friends using AIM, ICQ, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, and Zephyr.
I'm having a bit of a problem getting it to connect to Jabber (Google Talk), and it sometimes won't connect to the aim server. I haven't tested MSN or Yahoo yet. I'm going to try to port a beta of 2.0 to see if that resolves the connection issues. But with any luck, I will release a working version this afternoon.

This is sweet. The only thing i'm worried about is about the input speed. It is very nice nontheless. Thumbs up Adam!

I tested it, and it worked great with an external keyboard.

Also, handwriting recognition is very smooth as well. However, the input area is covered by the keyboard. All and all, it's about as useful and fast as on my Nokia 770.

Google Talk and MSN aren't working because of problems with encryption. I'm trying to resolve this before I release it.

Even if it was more difficult to type on it, having Gaim on the iLiad is a wonderful way for staying connected with your friends while you're reading a great book on the beach. That is, assuming you have WiFi Internet access...

A quick update. I've got Pidgin 2.0.1 working with Google Talk (probably all the other protocols as well). There are a lot of dependencies, so I've gotta figure out the best way to package it. Expect a release in the not too distant future.

Nice picture but alas iRex haven't given us the ability to move applications front/back on the screen.

You could pop something like gaim up, you could even give it a key to push it backwards, but then the PDF viewer or Mobipocket viewer has no key to push itself backwards to allow gaim to come forwards.

And even if you did hack the visibility? contentLister has an iron fist over the IPC channels for the Tool and Page bars and no API I've found for letting it keep up with visibility changes.

I played with all this for x48, I wanted to make it truly a pop up calculator that could be popped back away. I had a Matchbox wrapper for it so I could pop it up and down from the Toolbar but alas iRex didn't play well with it.

The matchbox window switcher works well enough...
