Interesting approach - but sorry, no. I meant that quite literally, without any letter magic: Author and job just don't seem to go together at all.

Correctamundo. Indeed Salinger seems to have served as entertainment director (Wikipedia has it as "activity director and possibly as a performer") on the M.S. Kungsholm in the Carribean for a short time in 1941. That's one I'm surely going to read up on in the near future. Must have been a barrel of laughs.

Correct. DeLillo had a summer job as a parking attendant when he was a teenager. Boring job, so he got into reading. Perhaps he wouldn't have become a writer without that job, ultimately...

A last-minute hat-trick! Three correct answers, which makes you the winner with 6 points over HomeInMyShoes' 5! Over to you for the next quiz.

Goodness me. It was a 50:50 with those last two guesses.

OK, another quiz. Let's see.... I think we'll go for numbers in book titles. A point for each number, a point for each full title and a point for each author.

1. How many steps?
2. How many cities in this story?
3. How hot is that? Burning hot!
4. How many Musketeers?
5. How many spotted dogs?
6. How old was that boy diarist?
7. How far did they go in that submarine?
8. How many were there at the end of the book?
9. Ignoring the dog, how many men were in that craft?
10. It something seems to good to be true, there must be one of these, but how many could be found in this book?

All right, Orlok's won anyway (bad time I picked for having an ice-cream), but here's my guess for #8:

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie?

Yes! A very honorable three points to doubleshuffle.

Dodie Smith is the author of 101 Dalmations.

There's one vital word hinted at in question 10 which you need to guess. I suspect that no-one here will have any trouble with the number once they guess the word.

I'll leave Q.10 for anyone to guess for fun, but over to orlok for the next quiz.
