1. I'll guess 1969 and the first move would be to take pennies and halfpennies out of circulation, probably followed a bit later by taking those big lumpy threepences out.

I'm not sure there are any countries trying to stick with an official exchange rate any more. |

Answers this evening, with points going to nearest guess for coin value and start of decimalisation if no-one gets those questions spot-on.

1. The decimalisation issue - if you say much earlier it might have been shortly after the French Revolution; weren't the revolutionary French great decimalisers? But anybody daring to suggest such things in Britain at the time would certainly have been frowned off the island, wouldn't they?
4. Just for the heck of it: A million dollars? |

I'm off to my ballroom dancing class. I'll be back in a couple of hours to put this quiz to bed.
So if anyone wants to put in their guesses for the remaining questions, now's the time! |

Remaining answers:
1. In what year did the UK first move towards decimalisation of its currency, and how? 1849, with the introduction of the florin, 1/10th of a pound. doubleshuffle gets the points, only 70 years out, better than anyone else! 3. How much were the following in old (UK) money and new money? A groat was four old pence, or 1.67 new pence. 4. And as an apology to US members for the UK-centric nature, what's the largest value coin it has ever been proposed that the US Mint should issue? One trillion dollars. No, really. I'll give the points to doubleshuffle, only a factor of a million out. 10 points to doubleshuffle. 15 points to Bilbo1967. 2 points to Bookpossum. Over to Bilbo1967 for the next quiz! |
