Not my area of expertise at all. Was it that they were all sung by a group rather than by an individual?

No, I don't think that's the case.

1. Waterloo, Abba
2. Wannabe, Spice Girls
3. How Long Will I Love You? Ellie Goulding
4. Teenage Kicks, Undertones
5. Yesterday, Beatles
6. Mercedes Benz, Janis Joplin
7. Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry
8. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Bob Dylan
9. Crazy, Gnarles Barkley
10. Wouldn't It Be Nice, Beach Boys

Bonus point: this song would also fit in the group. What's its particular claim to fame?

Stay Just a Little Bit Longer, Maurice Williams
Clues:
- in times gone by, a higher proportion of popular songs had this characteristic than is the case today.
- there's a connection with DJs

They were all chosen as Record of the Week (or some such) by popular DJs of the day?

I'm off to bed soon, so I'll leave you with a large clue:

Billy Joel's song "The Entertainer" would not quite fit in this group, but it does contain a huge hint as to the answer.

Don't over-think this one. And don't forget the bonus question!

As the man with the steering wheel sticking out of his trousers said to the doctor!

Anyway, I just listened to The Entertainer and the only thing I can think of is from the line, "So they cut it down to 3:05". Were all these songs cut in length at the request of DJs?

If that's right, I suppose the answer to the bonus question is that it's the shortest song ever to be released, or get to number one, or something like that.

Waterloo won The Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton (74 I believe) and they do have a rule that a song cannot exceed three minutes. So me thinks Bilbo1967 is on to something.

I think Kumabjorn might have it (in which case, they get the point).

Is it that all the songs are under 3 minutes?

Bilbo, Kumabjorn and Pdurrant, you're all correct. They're all songs that are under three minutes in length, which used to be the case for most popular songs played on the radio, or squashed onto those vinyl things we put on our record players.

Bilbo is also correct regarding "Stay": it's the shortest single ever to reach the top of the American charts, at 1 minute 50 seconds.

Good work by the three of you! I declare Bilbo the winner.
