Sounds as if 6. is Charlotte Bronte.

It is indeed Charlotte Bronte, during her Belgian sojourn.

Two to go!

Auden and Thackeray are both correct. Thanks for providing the remaining answers, Bookpossum and Issybird.

Final results: a tie between Issybird and Poohbear, with Bookpossum and Fbone only one point behind. Well done, everyone!

Quotes from famous people about famous people. One point for the person or said (or wrote) it, and one point for the person it was said (or written) about.

1. "He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary."
Said by Faulkner of Hemingway. Fbone, Orlok, 1 point each.

2. "It is better, I should think, to have him for a friend than an enemy, for he is a most formidable-looking personage. I listened to him as he conversed with the other gentlemen. All he says is most simple, but often cynical, harsh, and contradictory."
Said by Charlotte Bronte of Thackeray. Poohbear, Issybird 1 point each.

3. "But my God, how beautiful [Shakespeare] is, who else is as mysterious as he is; his language and method are like a brush trembling with excitement and ecstasy. But one must learn to read, just as one must learn to see and learn to live."
Said by Van Gogh of Shakespeare. Bookpossum, Fbone 1 point each.

4. "The greatest of superficial novelists... It were, in our opinion, an offense against humanity to place [Dickens] among the greatest novelists."
Said by Henry James of Charles Dickens. Poohbear, 2 points

5. "[Heinlein] is a fine-looking man, very impressive and very military in stance; you can tell he has a military background, even to the haircut. He knows I'm a flipped-out freak and still he helped me and my wife when we were in trouble. That is the best in humanity, there; that is who and what I love."
- Said by Philip K. Dick of Heinlein. Fbone, 2 points.

6. "She looked a little stout, vivacious lady, very plainly dressed, not much dignity or pretension about her." - Said by Charlotte Bronte of Queen Victoria. Bookpossum, 2 points.

7. "[He] always had something of...riveting stupidity to say on any subject."
Said by Gore Vidal of The Duke of Windsor (the former Edward VIII). Poohbear_nc, 2 points

8. "He is so amiable that I pronounce you will love him, if ever you become acquainted with him."
- Said by Jefferson of John Adams. Issybird, 2 points.

9. "Of all novelists in any country, [Trollope] best understands the role of money. Compared with him even Balzac is a romantic."
Said by Auden of Trollope. Issybird, Billi, 1 point each.

10. "No matter when this man might have left us, we would have felt that we had suffered an irreplaceable loss... may he have a lasting influence on the hearts and minds of men!"
Said by Einstein of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Issybird, Bookpossum, 1 point each

Scores:
Issybird, Poohbear_nc 5 points
Bookpossum, Fbone 4 points
Billi, Orlok 1 point

Yippee! Haven't won in this thread for a while [evil math/logic questions].

Now, for something completely different!

Recently, we experienced a Super Moon - when a full moon coincides with the closest approach of the moon to the Earth => moon appears HUGE in the sky.

So, can you define/explain/describe what gives rise to these "lunar episodes"?

1. Blue Moon - orlok

2. Wet Moon

3. Harvest Moon - HIMS

4. Hunter's Moon - Fbone

5. Moon Illusion - Fbone

and, so as not to discriminate,

6. Sun Dog - HIMS

orlok - 1 point
HIMS - 2 points
Fbone - 2 points

1. A Blue Moon is the second full moon in the same calendar month, a rare event.

3. Harvest moon is caused by the dust from the combining and harvesting of crops in the fall. The dust causes light refraction and when the moon is lower on the horizon the dust makes the moon appear with a yellowish-orangish tinge and also appear very large.

6. Sun dog. Ice crystals in the upper atmosphere cause refraction and the appearance of a ring of lightish colour around the sun or actually spots. Generally it is said to indicate a shift in the weather, usually to the colder extreme. While it is normally associated to the winter months (at least in Canada), I have seen them in the summer on occasion.

There is also a calendar reference for naming a 'Harvest Moon' - can you add this to your answer?

The first full moon after the usual Neil Young festival in Canada?

Probably some time around the autumnal equinoxe. After?
