Perhaps not to strangulate our earth. Remember that the string was barely long enough to reach all the way around the earth.

What I'm interested in is who could spin such a long string in the first place

Gimli, son of Gloin, (I think). It's been a while since I read it as well. And with the amount of names in that book, it's almost as bad as the Icelandic family sagas
