I am not sure about "private citizen", but my mom, uncle, grandfather and other family members are big baseball fans (I avoid sports

). I remember them talking about old baseball players and fan mail for Hank Arron.

Yip yip! But that was the end of my knowledge. Except something about another player named Dons that was in the same conversation.

As to year .. 1959? or number .. Thousands - maybe 2000? -- I have no clue.

I recall the year, 1974, well. As to the number of letters, a lot. Maybe 20,000? Sadly as I also recall a lot of the letters were hate mail from people who did not want a black man breaking Ruth's record.

I don't know the kids name, but I remember hearing the story about a kid who had cancer and wanted to set the world record for the most get well cards. It went viral on the net, and she received millions of cards and kept receiving them for years -- even after beating cancer.

Yes, it was 1974. Hank was one run short at the end of the 73 season. He received over 900,000 letters. Many were hate mail sadly. He had to have bodyguards due to all the death threats.

Yes, you have the right story. But what's his name?

(I sent him a card in 1990, and got in trouble for posting the chain letter on (IIRC) Fidonet.)
