Sharpe, WT: The New Testament in Possible Chronological Order. v1. 8th Dec 2010

Most people have at least a passing acquaintance with the traditional order of the New Testament: It begins with the gospels known as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and ends with the book of Revelation. But scholars have long known that the traditional order bears little resemblance to the actual order in which the books were composed. They know, for example, that the letters of Paul predate the gospels; that Matthew was not the first gospel; and are confident that the book of Revelation was far from the last book in the current canon to be written.

This collection represents an effort to present the books of the New Testament arranged—as far as I can determine—in chronological order of their actual composition. For the text of the books I used the American Standard Version of 1901. It is my belief that by reading the New Testament in this way, a much clearer picture emerges of who Jesus was and what he taught. I further believe such a reading helps us to see not only how the various doctrines of Christianity emerged and grew into orthodoxy, but also how the picture of Jesus envisioned by his earliest followers changed and transformed with time.

This is a work in progress, and I hope the reader will help to ensure the improvement of future editions by providing feedback. The next edition, which I do not anticipate having ready prior to the end of 2011 at the very earliest, will be considerably expanded and revised.

This is the epub version of The New Testament in Possible Chronological Order.

Your footnotes/endnotes need a link back as ADE for Windows does not have a way back.

Thanks, Jon. I'll incorporate that in the next version. The Kindle version doesn't have that drawback, as all you have to do is hit the back button, but it's a bit trickier on the Sony. On my PRS-600, you need to go Options > History and hit the back arrow. I don't know how it operates on yours.

Why do you keep calling it an ADE? Aren't epub and Adobe Digital Editions completely separate critters? Or do you mean something different by ADE? Are you looking at this file on your PC or your reader?

On the 650, same way as the 600. But it does have it. And it's not that hard to get to.

I'm not calling it ADE. But ADE is the most used program to view ePub and ADE for Windows does not have a back button. So when you click a link that moves you someplace else in the ePub, there's no way to go back unless you know the page number. I was looking at the file using ADE for Windows.

Well, that sucks. But it's also good to know. Thanks for the insight, Jon. Now for certain, I know that the more complete version will have to contain back-links to compensate. I'm glad now I decided to treat each occurrence of a linked verse as a separate instance. That will at least cut down on some of the work I need to do.

BTW, one of my secret weapons in this endeavor is personally knowing a Reform rabbi who has let it be known that he's there to answer any questions he can in relation to the subject matter (knowing he speaks fluent Hebrew, I originally contacted him concerning the meaning of a particular Hebrew word). Like me, he considers himself "one variety of secular humanist" and has generously said to "feel free to call on me for anything." I think he likes the idea that, as a non-believer, I have no theological ax to grind.
