Thanks for that info, Shorttimer and Stickybuns. I emailed my granddaughter who lives in LA about her store closing.

For me, the three Borders I've always gone to are the ones slated to be closed in the St Louis area. Will have to keep hitting them up to see what the sales end up being.

I could really use a big discount on a reference book or two. Please do post if you see a sale happening.

The Kobo going on clearance probably depends: Does Borders actually own Kobo, or is Borders just the primary brick-and-mortar retailer for Kobo?
I do think that we'll see another price drop on the Kobo, but I can't imagine it being as much as 50%. |

Personally, I don't think these so-called fire sales will amount to much. Popular and expensive merchandise will just be moved to other nearby stores. |

Agreed. I remember listening to a story on NPR (it may have been "This American Life") back when Circuit City went under... apparently during liquidation "sales" prices go UP. Weird, huh?

Yep. They increase the "real" prices so the discounts look like more.
Also, a lot of companies (especially those in Chapter 7) hire liquidation specialists -- that is, outside companies who go around selling off merchandise from ex-stores, like Circuit City. Those companies bring in all kinds of crap from other stores that didn't sell the last time, and sometimes even stuff specifically made for the purpose, kind of a slightly higher quality equivalent of the things you find in dollar stores, to sell to the hordes of eager buyers. Which of these they're allowed to do varies by state. Border's may not do this, as they're keeping 2/3 of their stores open for the moment, but it's something to keep an eye out for. Like anything else, know the prices, know what you're looking for, and don't get suckered into buying something ... "oooh, this turnip twaddler is half price!" ... you neither need nor want, especially not for more than you could buy it for elsewhere, just because you got dazzled by the big "EVERYTHING MUST GO" sign over the front door. |

Opened & damaged goods were the only things on sale the two times I went to their supposed "sale". I really prefer ebooks, but I loved paper books. Time marches on. |

I stopped in at the "liquidation sale" at the downtown Indianapolis Borders this afternoon, the discount was only 20% off, but already the place was a zoo. Walked out without buying a thing.

Stopped by my store in Long Beach, CA, and they had 20-40% off, but the employee told me that ebook readers were "not on sale yet". The only thing I considered was a book light for 30% off, but the one I liked they only had a single display unit.
