I did that very thing with one of my extra readers--loaded it up with books and lent it to my sister. Last week she called me to ask if two of the books, which she had read and enjoyed, were available in hard copy so she could purchase them and add them to her library.

No it hasn't. Apple invented the book, and Steve Jobs has not announced any intention of letting users share their licensed materials with family or friends .

"Amazon have missed the boat," claimed a Barnes and Noble Spokesperson. "Their outdated approach only allows certain enabled e-books to be loaned a single time, for a non-adjustable two-week period of time--even less than can be done with a cheaper, paper-based book. Our new technology, enabled on all Nook versions, enables all of the digital books you own to be shared multiple times, without such restrictions, yet still prevents multiple individuals from unfairly reading the same book at the same time."

Although the sharing technology was not demonstrated due last-minute troubleshooting, an insider described the technique as "actually loaning the physical nook (and all the books on in) to your friend".

In a separate announcement, Macmillan Publishers, Inc.. announced a lawsuit against Barnes and Noble in order in order to restrain this technology from reaching the market. "This illegal and unethical sharing technology will directly harm the ability of our authors to make money from their works," they argued in an open letter to the Internet, raising investor fears that Barnes and Noble may soon be vilified online as Amazon themselves were earlier this year when they attempted to challenge publisher price fixing and collusion by temporarily halting sales of physical books.

The thing is, most of the p-Books I have actually say in the 'fine' print on the copyright page that I'm not allowed to lend it, MacMillan might have a case. B&N is attempting to increase sales by making the e-Book more like a p-Book, but the publishers just don't get it. They'd rather lose the sale/kill the e-Book market and pretend people aren't lending p-Books.

It is real - it's just not what the people (me?) who skim too fast thought it was.

I can see why it couldn't wait for April 1st; every opportunity for one-upping Amazon must be used.

You know, the funniest part of this is that it is more or less true?

I mean, if you want to lend someone one of your BN ebooks, just have them side-load it to their nook and open it with your BN.com CC#. The Nook doesn't keep the card number accessible, just uses it to open the book. Obviously, you probably don't want to do this for strangers, but trusted friends and family, yep, you can lend them a book forever or as long as they want to keep it on their device. Done it for hubby... and am expecting him to do it for me in the near future, since he bought an ebook I want to read.

Some people think it wasn't a meteor, and the extinction period was over a longer period. It's hard to know for sure since dating technologies aren't that accurate - 10 years or even 100 years can change a lot on this planet (as we've seen), but it is within the margin of error for radiometric dating.

Such a shame that the actual function on both devices is so restricted, the limitation of only being read by one person at a time is okay but the sheer arbitrariness of only being able to make one 2 week loan seems like it would just lead to less people using it at all.
