Plot summary from Amazon: Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity, as misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. In this supremely satisfying story, Jane Austen balances comedy with seriousness, and witty observation with profound insight. If Elizabeth Bennet returns again and again to her letter from Mr Darcy, readers of the novel are drawn even more irresistibly by its captivating wisdom. Illustrations are used, with thanks, from http://www.mollands.net and http://www.solitary-elegance.com. Both these web sites are great resources for all fans of Jane Austen! Enjoy! EDIT: 2 Mar 08 The tool originally used to create this book made a bit of a hash of all the paragraph breaks. Completely recreated the book (this time preserving the paragraphs as the author wrote them!) and generally improved the layout and formatting. Uploaded v2. EDIT: 27 Mar 08 As a result of reading the book, spotted two typos and an uncentred scene change. Fixed, and uploaded v3. EDIT: 10 Aug 08 Replaced the cover with a much improved one. Thanks to Paul Durrant for this. Uploaded v4. EDIT: 25 Apr 09 Spent the last month thoroughly proofing the book against the first edition text. Dozens of genuine errors corrected, and literally thousands of changes (changes to pretty much every sentence in the book) made in punctuation to match the first edition's punctuation, which is very different to modern usage. Note that this version of the book now uses Austen's original spellings, which may appear odd to modern readers: her random use of "ei" in words which we now spell "ie", such as "neices" instead of "nieces", "shew" instead of "show", "chuse" (sometimes, but not always) instead of "choose", "staid" instead of "stayed", and many more. The spelling is also internally inconsistent: "Philips" sometimes appears as "Phillips", for example, "de Bourgh" is randomly "De Bourgh". All this matches the original text. Uploaded v5. EDIT: 14 Jan 13 Another round of thorough proofing. Many more errors fixed, and also the formatting greatly improved. I would now regard this a a finished text; if you find even the smallest error, please let me know. Uploaded v6. Interesting note on the size of this file
Compressed, it's 2.83
Uncompressed as a Bbeb file, it's 2.88 This is due, one would think, to the illustrations? Let me add a very appreciative "Thank you!" for this classic. Don |

Yes, the large size is due to the illustrations, the originals of which are slightly over 3MB in size, as JPG files.

I haven't seen any big gains from zipping these lrfs. Seems to be maybe 5% compression in general

No gain at all. ZIP is, however, preferable as an upload format because some web servers don't recognise funny extensions like "LRF" as being a binary format and can corrupt the file on upload or download. ZIP is a safe choice for "packaging" uploads, compression or no compression. It only takes a moment to unzip the downloaded file.

I'm reading this right now, thanks for taking the extra time to add the illustrations.
