A few I haven't seen mentioned:

'The Things they Carried' - Tim O'Brien
'Fleur' - Louise Erdrich
'The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber' - Papa Hemingway (an oldie-but-goodie)
'Ava Wrestles the Alligator' - Karen Russell (the story Swamplandia! is based on)
'The Laugh' - Tea Obreht

I'll add a few to the list:

Friend of my Youth by Alice Munroe
Of course there are many Munroe stories to choose from but for some reason this one is the richest for me.

To Everything There is a Season by Alistair MacLeod
I've read this story at least 20 times - it haunts me! Here is a link to a great reading of it by Les Carlson for CBC.

http://www.cbc.ca/asithappens/featur...stair-macleod/

The Swimmer by John Cheever

The Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry
This one because of how it made me laugh when I first read it at the age of 8.

This thread is missing a few masters of the form, especially Borges. My favourite Borges stories are "Pierre Menard, author of the Quixote," "Three versions of Judas", "The Library of Babel."

Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" says quite a bit about the west's interactions with the non-west. The horror, the horror.

Lu Xun's satirical short stories are definitely worth a read.

Did Hemingway ever write anything better than "Big Two-Hearted River"?

Kawabata Yasunari wrote tiny little stories throughout his career. My favourite of his "palm-of-the-hand" tales is "Mr. Thank You." It's just a couple pages, but was made into a charming feature film.

My favourite Japanese short stories are Sakaguchi Ango's "the Idiot" & "In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom.” These are elliptical, yet very moving.

I like the short stories by O.Henry, his "Gift of the Magi" is a classic. And then there is Jack London who wrote some good ones.

Lucia Perillo's Happiness is a Chemical in the Brain is turning out to be quite the collection. Doctor Vick's and Saint Jude in Persia are standing out so far.
