Blackmore, R.D.: Lorna Doone. v2 03 Oct 2010

R. D. Blackmore was one of the most famous English novelists of the last half of the 19th century. During his career he had a close following around the world. He won literary merit and acclaim for his vivid descriptions of the countryside, sharing with Thomas Hardy a West of England background and a strong sense of regional setting in his works. He was noted for his eye for and sympathy with nature, and critics of the time described this as one of the most striking features of his writings.

Lorna Doone is nowadays the most famous of his many works, but was not his favourite. It is an historical novel of high adventure set in the south west of England around the turbulent time of Monmouth's rebellion in 1685. Told through the life of young farmer, John Ridd, it is a moving love story of a man determined to right wrongs, to rescue Lorna from an outlaw clan who had murdered his father and her mother, and to win her heart and hand.

There is a problem with this book. It has 75 chapters, and an unnecessary and unwanted blank page is seen between chapters 37 and 38, and between 74 and 75. I have no idea why, and would be most grateful to anyone who can give me possible causes to check.

Regards, Alex

Although the version 1 opens without problem with the ADE and Sony desktop readers and with the Cybook Gen3 and ECO Readers it will not open with my Sony PRS 650. The problem seems to be with the last HTML file, which was 296Kb. I have divided that file into two files, and found that the ebook now works on the Sony reader. So it looks as though the maximum file size for an ePub to be read on a Sony is somewhat less than 296Kb.

Regards, Alex
