Thumbs up Children's Book Donation Campaign 'Read For The Record' October 7th 2010

I just received an email from DK Publishers inviting me to participate in this campaign to donate real, physical, print books to young children by reading free books online with your child AND help to break a world record of children reading the same book on the same day, which is Thursday, October 7th, 2010. The book is "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats, one of my childhood favorites! The more free children's books you read, the more you donate. There are lots of books for children of different age groups (up to age 10) to choose from.

I thought that this was worth sharing with the readers here at MobileRead! I hope you'll check it out!

Mission
Since 2006, more than four million children and adults have taken part in Jumpstart’s annual Read for the Record Campaign.

Together they’ve helped spotlight the importance of developing reading and literacy skills in young people and the role that these essential skills play in shaping a lifetime of successful learning and achievement.

Jumpstart believes that every child enters the world with the potential to succeed and it is unacceptable that poverty too often prevents millions of children from achieving their dreams. Unfortunately, nearly half of all children in low-income neighborhoods start first grade up to two years behind. Even worse, once they fall behind, it’s most often impossible for them to catch up to their peers.

Your reading can help give a child who is just developing these important skills the chance to take part in a nationwide campaign to showcase the fun and excitement of reading. Even better, with your help children who take part thanks to We Give Books can help set a new world record with a brand new book of their own.

Impact
Since 1993, more than 70,000 preschool children across America have benefited from millions of hours of Jumpstart service. This year alone, Jumpstart volunteers are serving more than one million hours with 13,000 preschool children in more than 60 communities across America.

Since 2006, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Campaign has

• Raised more than $6.2 million to provide books, supplies, and a proven program to children in need

• Provided nearly 800,000 books for children living in low-income neighborhoods

• Encouraged more than three million children to experience for themselves the power of reading

Goal
Help give 100,000 copies of The Snowy Day—this year’s official book of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Campaign—to pre-schoolers in communities across the United States.
