LG to Make E-paper for New Generation of Devices

This is very interesting ...

http://www.pcworld.com/article/20412...f_devices.html

Quote:
The company expects to begin mass producing 9.7-inch color and 19-inch flexible e-paper, according to an SEC filing it made on Friday. E-paper, or electronic paper, is a display used in e-readers on which text appears as it would on printed paper.

19-inch would just about solve the whole "full PDF" display issue

That's nice.

Wake me when LG, Mirasol, Pixel Qi and color e-Ink actually get used in mass-produced products.

"LG also is one of the suppliers of the 9.7-inch e-paper display Amazon uses in its Kindle DX e-reader."

Surprise...and I thought every screen was manufactured by the same company (Eink ?)...Wonder if that means anything regarding the quality of the screen, and if different companies are involved in making Kindle's screens, could that explain differences that some see in Kindle 2 versus Kindle 2i screens ?

"For example, the Kindle's front panel has a flexible substrate, but electronics on the back panel to manage pixels on the screen cannot be flexed"

I didn't know that either...I thought every eReader now available used a "glass screen"...Or are they talking about another layer ?

The glass substrate is what can't be flexed.

Sorry, just a joke...no matter what the size eReader, we complain it can't really display a full A4/letter PDF

Yes, but they're talking about "flexible substract" for the Kindle...Or are there more than one substract in a screen ?

I guess they mean the upper layer which contains E-Ink particles. That one is indeed very robust.

What would be the point of just having part of it flexible?
