I have so many, it is hard to name just one or few. My favorite are all nonfiction that change your life in a positive way.

I might as well nominates something 5-star worthy.

I'll nominate Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand. It is non-fiction. I have read it. But it is too good a book not to read. Even if you've also read it, please nominate and then vote for it.

Quote:
On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane's bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant's name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he'd been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

I'll second Unbroken.

I'll Nominate The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I've been reading a lot of positive comments, and I hope that it qualifies as Literature (maybe Young Adult Literature)?

Bulgakov was working on the fourth. draft when he died in 1940. The complete version of the novel was not published in Russia until 1973.

Bukgakov was a very good writer and this is his best satire.

I would also recommend A Heart of a Dog by same author about a mad scientist type who creates a human dog hybrid.
Hello, toomanybooks.

Was this a recommendation for The Master and Margarita?

On the beach is a tad on the expensive side for my tastes although I like the book. When I read it years ago.

Completely agree - just I've read it several times, and it was also nominated for last month's read but AK beat it.

Library (Electronic or dead-tree)?.
Visit Canada where you can download it for free?

There are some options to make it cheaper--and I'd rather that price didn't affect the nomination process anyway. Certainly final voting (or the decision to participate or not once the vote is in) can be affected by price, but let's worry about that if/when an expensive book is actually selected, hmm? The goal is to read interesting, thought provoking literature... cheap would be a bonus, that's all.

Current Nomination

Hello, All.

I have gone through all four pages of this thread three times and, unless I'm completely blind, "On The Beach" has only been nominated four times. That won't be a problem as it is one of my favorites.

I nominate "On The Beach"

Here are the current recommendation numbers:

*(5) On The Beach
*(5) Seven Japanse Tales
*(5) A Question Of Upbringing
(4) Unbroken: A WWII Story of Survival, Resillience, and Redemption
(3) The Time Machine
(2) A Heart Of A Dog
(2) After Dark
(2) The Age of Innocence
(2) Feast Of All Saints
(2) Time's Arrow
(1) 1984
(1) Age Of War
(1) The Book Thief
(1) Pride And Prejudice
(1) Scartlet Dreams

Regards.
