Foxit kills off eSlick ebook reader

Quote:
FREMONT, Calif. - (Business Wire) Converging on its core business strength, Foxit Corporation, a leader in PDF software solutions, today announced that it will license its industry-leading PDF and ePub technology to key players in the eBook market to help enhance digital rights management, content management, content distribution and viewing technology in the space. The company will cease development of the eSlick™ Reader, its own electronic reading device, to focus on providing platform-independent PDF technology and multi-device support to leading eBook providers.

Not entirely unexpected, unfortunately. I sure hope they license their technology to some of the other players, and there are takers.

Its like banks - the small ones die off leaving just a handful of mega concerns. I think the ebook market will be the same 90% of the market will be in the hands of 2 or 3 vendors, leaving the bottom end for a dozen or more people to fight for

Lol, that system worked out real well for the banks, didn't it?

Many do not see how the existence of mega-concerns and super-corporations is actually subsisdised in many ways, and that there would be less of them in a freer market.

At any rate, Foxit's software is quite fine in desktop computers. I hope they can find a place in the eBook market.

It sure seems to have worked out well.

They get to privatise all the profits they make and socialise all the losses. Pay the share holders when times are good and have the taxpayer bail them out when times are bad. Seems like the best way to do business really. I'd certainly structure my own businesses that way if I could and if I had no conscience.

Cheers,

That's why I've stayed with a small regional bank. So far, knock on wood, it hasn't been bought up and I've been with them 10 years.

I was able to purchase the eSlick with micropay/rewards and all it cost me were the equivalent in books. Even after the firmware bug fixes it still is a POS, very poor implementation.

Of course – they became to big to fail and therefore could do whatever they liked knowing that the tax payer would always step in to rescue them.

I was tempted to buy it at one time when it was announced. It was cheaper than the competition (at the time), but still over the 'too expensive' threshold for me. And I understand it was pretty much sold out before it was even released. Guess the recent collapse in reader prices didn't fit in their plans.

Shame, I was hoping they would follow the recent cheap reader trend so I would buy one when it hit ~$150. On the plus side, it is great that their pdf will be integrated into other platforms, since good pdf support was the main reason I was interested in the eSlick, but unfortunately I will probably have to wait a long time before that integration is seen.
