Thing is, Windows RT and Windows 8 are different beasts. Windows RT offers the advantages of a mobile OS, but only supports a subset of the applications available for Windows. Windows 8 supports most of the applications developed for Windows over the years, but is a clumsy mobile OS.

On top of that, I suspect that vendors and consumers are taking advantage of this shift to mobile devices. I suspect that a lot of people want to see the cruft that has accumulated in desktop operating systems over the years to disappear.

They are not really different beasts. RT looks and feels exactly like Windows 8, the only difference is in what apps it will run and the hardware required to run it.

You do make a good point about the "cruft". Consumers usually don't care about all the legacy stuff. However businesses don't want to have to upgrade every application they use. Microsoft is in a tough situation.

Yes, as long as you stay away from legacy apps full Windows 8 is exactly the same tablet optimized interface as Windows RT. And when you use legacy apps on the "Desktop" you just plug in a USB mouse and everything is exactly as on a Windows 7 computer. You get the best of both worlds.

Dragging this thread back up... Apparently the Slate 7 is now delayed until June (it was supposed to be available in April) Given HP's track record with the TouchPad, either this one won't even see the light of day or be ready for them to be as good as given away a few weeks later

Update: HP has confirmed that it made a mistake in listing a June 2013 arrival date on the Slate 7's product page. In fact, the tablet is still slated (har) to arrive in April.
Well done whoever at HP got the date wrong...
