Onyx T68 - Is it right for you

I have now had my T68 for a number of weeks and love it. I personally rate it the best ereader on the market. But that doesn't mean that it is right for everyone.

If you have an Android Tablet and have installed and use ereader software then you have some idea of the T68 experience. Add some customisations for ereading, replace the colour screen with a more easy on the eyes e-ink display, and reduce the screen size to 6.8", and you are almost there.

Because that is what the T68 basically is, an Android Tablet customised as an e-reader. Out of the box it is set up as an e-reader. But if, for instance, you prefer any of the Android reader software to that pre-installed, it is usually just a simple matter of visiting the Google Play Store to download, say, Moon Reader Pro, or Aldiko, or whatever you prefer. You can also, of course, install other Android Apps if you choose, though this is of course not compulsory.

What this ereader does offer which is virtually unique amongst specialised eink readers is the ability to avoid being locked-in to one Vendor's "ecosystem" (without having to resort to Apprentice Alf). For instance, by installing the Kindle for Android App you are able to utilise the Amazon "ecosystem", including reading your Amazon ebooks on the device. Even DRM infested ones. Likewise, installing the Kobo Android App gives you like access to the Kobo "ecosystem". No need for removing DRM or managing your books with Calibre, though of course it may well be prudent to do so (subject, of course, to legality in your jurisdiction).

So the T68 will appeal to those who would like an e-reader that they can use with virtually all formats and with multiple vendors, and read drm infested ebooks without stripping the DRM.

It will also appeal, of course, to Geeks and other tinkerer's who want what is simply the best ereader on the market, the power of the Android operating system or simply want to play around.

And of course those who want a nice Android Tablet with an e-ink display, though in this case be aware that not all Android Apps currently operate well without a colour display.

It is probably not for those who are not prepared to perform some customisation to get it to work the way you want. Whilst it should work "out of the box" for you, if you are not prepared to do a little work customising then you may be better with another ereader.

It is not for those who simply want to buy ebooks from the Amazon or Kobo stores and read them on their devices with minimal fuss. Even those who strip DRM, convert formats etc do not need the T68, as, say, a Paperwhite (and presumably a Glo or Aura etc) will still give a great reading experience with an ebook which has had drm stripped and has been converted. Though some of this group may still want the most versatile ereader on the market.

Thanks to HarryT on these forums who pointed out that the T68 is a great ereader for those who want to manage a large library on a mobile device. This is because of the Android app "Calibre Companion", which does indeed do a great job of managing a library, including keeping full metadata on the device.

I am very happy with my T68. It suits my needs for a number of reasons. But my Paperwhite has been fantastic. In all fairness I could not say that the T68 provides a significantly better reading experience, but when customised properly it is a little better, probably because of the superior screen. It is the sheer versatility of the T68 which shines for those who need or want it.

Yes. I was thinking about the I86, which is similar in size to a Galaxy Tab. I went with the T68 because I eventually thought the I86 might be just a little too big for my needs. I'll be interested to see what others think when it does come out.

[D]arryl, thank you for this summary.

May I ask which 'version' of the T68 you purchased? (Amazon, or Booxter, etc.)

What are the difference? Is this the Lynx vs non Lynx version?

Harry said there aren't much differences. But what are the small difference anyway?

Lynx has Ivona TTS (which you can download from the Google Play appstore anyway) and a link to a Polish bookstore. That's pretty much it.

Thanks, Harry.

I know there are cost considerations (price and shipping to one's country) that factor in when making a purchasing decision.

Too, there may perceived (or real) differences between attention from the vendor-to-the-customer regarding satisfaction and attention.

And also, in case of disaster, the ability (and cost) of returning the unit for a replacement and/or credit with the least amount of angst.

I might add that the above points would apply to any purchase of any electronic device.

The fact that the Lynx version can be bought from Amazon is a big "plus" if you need to return it for any reason.

I've only checked it out from a friend about 10 days ago.
I loved the idea, because now I usually have to take 2 to 5 different readers/tablets with me, to cover all potential needs.

But I was quite disappointed about the quality of the screen.
It did seem kind of yellowish/grey. Darker and less appealing than my other readers.
I don't see much of a difference between my Nook GlowLight, Kobo Aura HD or Kindle Paperwhite 2. But the Onyx T68 did seem a bit like what I've had on my readers maybe 2 years ago.

Did my friend get a "monday unit"?
Am I over-critical?
Or do you see the same "yellowish" saturation?
So, does your "best reader on the market" refer to technical capabilities (Google Play)? Or would you say the same about haptic (I wasn't too fond of the build quality of the Android buttons), touch & feel (I like the idea of page turning buttons, but couldn't make them work in Kindle and other 3rd party apps), speed (page turns in Kindle, Nook and Kobo apps did seem painfully slow) and last but not least display quality?

The display is a little darker/somewhat yellow - but that doesn't bother me.

Is there any explanation, why the display appears a bit darker/somewhat yellow?
They (Kindle, Kobo, Nook, Onyx) use the same manufacturer. As far as I know, Onyx didn't add any layer (touchscreen and such) or something like that?!
I guess, it can't be the fonts. The yellowish appearance, in my opinion, is from the background, not the text...

The screen isn't as clear as the PW2, but it's good enough - on a par with the PW1, to my mind. The device itself, though, is enormously more flexible. For me, the "killer app" is Calibre Companion, which allows me to easily store and search my 4000+ book library on the device very easily.

Sony T3 doesn't have an integrated light, right?
And Sony has dropped their store.
So you basically could compare to any ePUB capable reader reduced in price.
I see lots of cheap Nooks, for example.
