Two more lists to add to the collection : The Times reveals Britain's Top 10 most stolen books, and on a less illicit note, the Top 10 most borrowed from libraries.



Yes, the latest Harry Potter is on both lists. But it's not Britain's most stolen book. Terry Pratchett is the most-stolen author. And the thieves come in some unexpected clothing.

Finally, there are some thefts that simply elude comprehension. The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding by Arnold Schwarzenegger was stolen from Liverpool Central Library so often that eventually the librarians stopped restocking it. And Pam Jones from Troutmark Books in Cardiff reports that someone stole The Devil a Monk Would Be: a Survey of Sex and Celibacy in Religion.

“It was about nuns and monks getting hot under the collar when thinking about the opposite sex, and had tips to calm them down,” she says. “One piece of advice was to sit in an icy pond. I was gutted when that went missing because I was reading it.”

Book theft can be such a senseless crime.

Now if only the libraries had all those books in digital editions, it might not be such a problem.

That is fascinating! When I worked at the bookstore, we had big problems with sex books and manga.

“The worst theft we've had was of The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World, which was worth £100,” says Peter Donaldson, the owner of Red Lion Books in Colchester, Essex. “How someone had a big enough coat to walk out with that under it I really don't know.”

I saw that atlas once, it was on display at our local bookshop. That thing is huge and I think you need a steel reinforced bookcase to hold it...

Years ago, I used to use Liverpool Central Library - it was a great library, but their security system was rubbish.
I even explained to one of the librarians how easy it was to circumvent; but they're response was that there were aspects to it they couldn't divulge, and it was more robust than it appeared.
So I decided to put it to the test - I still have the book.

According to the manager of my local B&N, the most stolen book from their shelves is the Bible.

I'm sorry .... but, the Ordnance Survey maps for Exmoor are the second most stolen book?? If you guys don't watch it, the UK is going to get a reputation for being stodgy.

yeah but watch out, they've probably been staking out your house since then and any second now they're going to break the door down shouting "Librarians !! put your hands in the air !!!"
